Description:
(Princeton): original holograph 0. No Binding. Very Good. Holographed version of the two-stanza, 14-line poem "Browning's Lineage" in Van Dyke's hand and signed by him. On notepaper measuring 5" x 8" in black in, signed by Van Dyke (1852 - 1933) at the bottom of the sheet, with the sheet labeled "Dr. Henry van Dyke Princeton NJ February" in a different hand in different pen and ink. The poem differs from the printed version that was published in THE WHITE BEES AND OTHER POEMS (NY: Scribner's, 1909). The last two lines of the first stanza in the published version read: "Through all the world, -- the poets laurel-crowned/ With wreaths from which the autumn takes no toll." In this presumably earlier version, the last two lines read;" In foray through all the world, and around/ With faceless light that shines from pole to pole." We don't know what to make of the note "February" at the top od the page, except to speculate it may be a record of when this version was composed. Small hole in upper part of… Read More
