London: None. London, None, c1969. Manuscript. Unbound. Very good. Unbound typescript of Groves' second and final novel. Published in 1969 by Robert Hale. On Carnell headed paper, though this ms has amendments throughout presumably in the author's hand given the content. The assumption being that the present ms played a part in the book's production, rather than just being a form of advance copy sent to prospective publishers. 325pp rectos only. A little general wear overall. [9221, Hyraxia Books]. c1969 . Very Good. Unbound. Manuscript. 1969.

London: R. Hardwicke. London, R. Hardwicke, 1871. First Edition. First Impression. Paperback. A very good copy. A rare item, a sequel to the Battle of Dorking of sorts. A very good copy considering it's a 150-year-old pamphlet. 64pp with one page of ads (ads also on the wrapper reverse). Spine mostly absent and chipped, stamp and name on upper wrapper, but excellent overall. A couple of trivial areas of spotting. [10709, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Paperback. 1st Edition. 1871.

Description:
London: The Tallis Press. London, The Tallis Press, 1905. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. Very good copies. Three volumes, described thus. (1) A very good copy inscribed by the author to the front endpaper, dated in the year of publication. Competition return slip still present. A little ageing to the leaves, and some toning and bumping to the spine. (2) A very good copy, though slightly poorer than copy #1. This copy has two leaves (3pp) of analysis to the rear, tipped in. As noted on the upper board, a competition was launched to resolve the mystery. The return slip has been removed and presumably posted. The solution stapled in is presumably a copy that the reader made of his solution. No indication of authorship. Front hinge pulled, spine a touch toned and bumped. (3) Very good. Presumably a slightly later issue with the competition details having been covered by an illustrated plate. The competition having likely ended. Probably the same same impression as the other two, just issued…

Description:
London: Sampson Low, Son and Marston. London, Sampson Low, Son and Marston, nd [1865]. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A near fine copy. Two volumes, complete. First book edition, several stories were published earlier in Chamber's and All the Year Round. A collection of 29 short stories. Mostly of an adventure sort, such as 'My First and Last Balloon Ascent' which involves a fight at 11,000 feet. There are fantasy elements to some of the tales, such as 'The Last of the Alchemists' and (fairly tame)supernatural elements such as 'How Professor Gaster Lectured a Ghost'. Other tales verge on fantasy: 'A Race with a Nightmare' seems to be going down that path but is rendered explicable quite early on. A nice collection, albeit one that isn't likely to pick up a Penguin Classics badge of honour any time soon. Apparently written with soldiers in mind. George Walter Thornbury (1828-1876) was an English poet, novelist, and essayist. He is best known for his…

Description:
New York: No Publisher. New York, No Publisher, n.d. [c1937]. Manuscript. Unbound. Fine condition. This must be the first draft with the amendments being so extensive; even the amendments have amendments. The hand in which the amendments have been made I suspect will be from one of the Wandrei brothers. It looks like Donald's hand (we have a number of manuscripts for comparison); though it is very compact it bears a good number of similarities. That said, other corrected typescripts that we have are more clearly in Donald's hand. The amendments are so extensive that one would have to expect great humility on the part of Howard to accept so much editing in the mid-stage of his writing output, though I did find a 1939 letter from Weird Tales rejecting one of Howard's stories so perhaps it could've been Donald. Of course, without any evidence of Donald having edited Howard's work - and I know of none - then Donald could be unlikely too. Either way, I've never seen such a heavily…

Description:
London: Macmillan and Co.. London, Macmillan and Co., 1876. Firist.First Impression. Paperback. A very good copy. Written to help illustrate how sanitation could improve lives, the book nowadays can be seen as equally a work of Utopian fiction. Including certain novel ideas such as a balance between cremation and burial, wherein the dead are interred in shrouds in articifical soil to aid decomposition. Uncommon in general, certainly in the original wraps and not having come from libraries. The orange wraps are rubbed and worn, but fairly tight overall. 47pp. [10946, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Description:
London: John Lane / Bodley Head. London, John Lane / Bodley Head, 1941. Proof. Paperback. A very good copy. Included in Anthony Burgess's list of Ninety-Nine Novels. In the introduction Burgess recounts how he read a copy returning from the war, and was struck by it's being Kafkaesque yet incorporating the three-dimensional characters more associated with English literature. He also notes that its claim to 'be regarded as a modern classic is as sound as that of Orwell's novel [Nineteen Eighty-Four]', though less obvious given its subtlety. Less obvious too than his earlier Wild Goose Chase. A quintessentially English dystopia (perhaps it wouldn't be amiss to call it a cosy dystopia, akin to the cosy catastrophes of the subsequent decade). The dystopia in question being the aerodrome itself and the local environs. A smaller scale affair, than Orwell's and most that come thereafter. An important book, undervalued in the current day, but welcome to sit on a shelf alongside…
