Founded in the early 18th century Closter is still a relatively small town in Bergen County.

Paper is somewhat fragile, some browning, aging, and corner staining, two corners chipped away, a few chips and tears, mostly in margins, center split at fold at bottom of the map, repaired with archival tape, two other small tears repaired with archival tape, a couple of other old tape repairs, coloring rather light. Despite the imperfections the image is fairly clean and bright. This is a rather scarce map from a scarce atlas (Atlas of Bergen County New Jersey 1776-1876). It was published during the American Centennial, and while it is somewhat sparsely filled in, the towns and highlights are prominently featured. Will require extra postage.

Elephant folio, leather spine and tips, gilt title on top cover, illustrated with 54 plates and maps. Hinges a little tender, but still pretty firm spine frayed, and partially detached at bottom, edgewear, paper a bit browned and toned, endpaper torn. Overall very good. The atlas provides maps and charts on all sorts of statistics from the nine censuses, taken in 1870. This includes occupations of people, race, literacy, population density, political divisions, age and sex, and religious affiliation. Much of this material is illustrated in maps and charts. While some copies are said to include 60 plates and or maps, this copy has 54. The number is consistent with the number presented in the index. Rather scarce item, the OCLC locates few copies. 16mo, leather, engraved title, [16], 558 pp. Partially disbound, with some signatures loose or separated from text block, some earlier tape repairs, engraved title also repaired, a couple of paper labels on spine, binding worn and chipped, joints split, missing endpapers, library label on front pastedown, contents somewhat aged and browned, and somewhat brittle, title page chipped at edges, and a bit browned, last leaf has small tear on top, with no loss, and bent from tape repairs. There were several editions of this work published, and the first seems to have been in 1655. Pagination varies, but this copy appears to be complete. A four page dedication in Latin is included with this copy. The dedication and preface first pages have woodcut borders and letters. The last page is "An Index of the Heads of the Specimen." OCLC.

Pamphlet, 8vo, paper wrappers, 38 pp. Some wear and chips to wrappers, and edges, normal aging and toning; otherwise very good.A classic Indian captivity first published in Philadelphia in 1784; there were several later editions, the last in 1904. Gilbert and his family were captured on April 25, 1780, and taken all the way to Canada. A party of eleven Seneca Indians, who invaded the Pennsylvania frontier where the Gilbert homestead was located, took them. But not before their homes were plundered and torched. They did not return until September 1782. The Gilberts were a very well known family, especially among the Quakers of eastern Pennsylvania, and their captivity attracted wide attention. The narrative is based on an account given verbally by Gilbert to Walton. Sabin 27348, Field 608, Streeter III 1655. Church 1203. Ayer 303.

16mo, original cloth with gilt title on top cover, illustrated with 30 lithographic portraits, 148, [4] pp. Some wear at extremities, top hinge somewhat weak, but still holding, one plate is loose, normal aging, some notes on endpapers; otherwise very good. Despite the fact that the title indicates volume one, this was the only edition published. While most of the text relates to biographies of illustrated officers, including a young Major General George B. McCellan, there are two pages dedicated to presenting Union and Rebel victories in the early part of the war.

52 folded and docketed uniform manuscript resolutions, mostly 4to, typically written on one side and docketed on the back, includes a contemporary cover sheet that originally held resolutions together, two small pictures of Lincoln and Grant included, housed in modern photo album. A few with folds at the top and minor chips, normal aging and browning; overall in very good condition. These resolutions were passed by the Public Aid Committee, which was created by the Newark City Council, at the beginning of the Civil War, to advance money to soldiers' families. These resolutions would then be given to a clerk for filing. This clerk seems to have had strong anti war or Copperhead sympathies, and gradually began editorializing as he wrote out the docketing on the back of each folded document. He titled the 31 March 1862 resolution, "For aid to families... in the war to abolish slavery." On 2 September it was "the war for the ruin of the country." Small broadside, 11 1/2x 9, printed on one side. A little darkened, with a few spots and some light dampstaining; else very good. This broadside is a response to the Democratic Party platform, which suggests the war is all but lost, and advises meeting with the Confederate government to talk peace terms. The National Union Ticket, supporting Abraham Lincoln, quotes at length from speeches of Jefferson Davis revealing the difficult circumstances facing the Confederacy, concluding "...Vote For Lincoln! This is the most effecfive way of EndingThe War And Restoring The Union."

Letter sheet (9 ¼ x 7 ½ ), 3pp. on 4 pp. lettersheet. Folded with nicks on folds, minor soiling, else very good. White was stationed near Washington D.C., and he provides a fair sketch of camp life and soldierly concerns during the first year of the conflict. His wants are few, and he goes to some lengths to let his wife know he is taking good care of himself. “I wash all my clothes regularly once a week, keep my hair cut very close and wash myself clean every morning. I have no fear of getting dirty or lousy.” Camp life is described as quite restrictive with lots of work. “Duty is very hard… we have to drill nearly eight hours every day, except when we are on the move.” He gives his wife advice on finances and other matters, and admonishes her that “above all I do not want you to believe any stories about men being shot” for disciplinary reasons.

This work contains significant and historically important government reports from the first year of the Civil War. The Civil War material includes the cost for funding the Union Army ($27 million), deployment of the Merrimack, concerns about Missouri pulling out of the Union, and the efficiency of a volunteer army. Also includes reports on conducting the 8th census, public works expenditures from 1789-1860, the condition and treatment of the Indians, and participation in the London Industrial Exposition I 1862.

The platforms of the National Union Ticket, supporting Lincoln for President, and Andrew Johnson for Vice President, is juxtaposed with that of the Democartic Party, supporting George B. McClellan for President. According to the commentary, the Union Platform wants to defeat the South through force of arms, and end slavery. It seems that the Democartic Party is silent on the subject of slavery, and is more interested in obtaining peace now.
