UNCLE HANSI'S WWI PATRIOTIC TRIBUTE TO ALSACE & FRANCE - A BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL VOLUME FOR CHILDRENHere is one of France's Sumptuously Designed Historical Volumes for Children. Each of the 100 pages have beautiful color illustrations - full page or smaller color illus designed within the text by Hansi & Huen. Folio size with red edges- with decorated eps of flying birds in shades of gray & white. The front inner hinge is cracked but tight, a vertical newspaper clipping (2 1/2" x 4 1/2") has been pasted onto the center of the inside front cover's ep - dated Feb 15, 1915. Endpaper bottom edge has 3 neatly repaired closed tears, and very slight loss at the bottom corner of 1st few pages. Spine tips and corner rub, gilt on cover dulled - still a very good copy. Uncommon. May need extra postage depending upon destination or weight

EACH WOODCUT FACES A POEM - written by JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY in rural dialect describing the monthSquare 4to, cream spine darkened, spine tips & corner rub, offsetting of glue residue on eps seems to be common. On the blank front-free ep there is a handwritten list - dated February 23, 1945, with owner's name at top followed by her 3 friends who are "On an Adventure". BEAUTIFUL COLOR PLATES BY JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH - AN EARLY 20th CENTURY MASTER ILLUSTRATOR OF CHILDHOOD. THE TEN FULL-PAGE COLOR PLATES HAVE LETTERED TISSUE GUARDS. Jessie Willcox Smith has selected the poems by famous poets or writers. Each poem has a b/w illustration at the top. There is a b/w illustration at the top of every left - hand page and a different b/w illustration at the top of right- hand page. The decorated endpapers have a repeated lovely green drawing of a young girl with her hoop against a cream background. TEG, blue gilt cloth, gilt is bright, pictorial label is pasted down within a center border. Pictorial label is lightly scratched, the corners on left side of the border are a bit rubbed. There is a bookplate in the center of the pastedown (ep). There is a break at The front eps' inner hinge but it had been previously neatly repaired and is tight. Illustrated with photographic stills from the film - it features a Jewish little girl, Rachel, and a Catholic little boy,Michael. They become fast friends (as are the town's Rabbi and Priest ) until a Protestant child tellsMichael that the Jews killed Christ - and adds he didn't like Catholics either.. Michael's mother doesn't make it any easier for him when he asks her if he could go to synagogue with Rachel and she answers "No, That would be a sin." Adventures ensue.The book has rubbing and wear at edges & corners - o/w VG condition. A timely book for today.

WONDERFUL B/W PHOTOGRAPHY by DARE WRIGHT who ARRANGES her EDITH & THE BEARS - AS IF WE ARE WATCHING A MOVIE. This First Edition in the Lonely Doll series finds Edith, Mr Bear and Little Bear visiting Mr. Bear's cousins for Christmas. For Mr Bear's Christmas gift - Edith works very hard - knitting a muffler - . But - Oh-Oh - it just did not turn out right - so Edith arrives at a lovely solution. 4to, red & white gingham checkered paper over boards with a b/w photo of Edith skating in the center. The dj repeats this design. Light rub to edges, spine tips & corners. Spine is a bit cocked to one side. Dust jacket is unclipped with a Fao Schwarz label covering the price - however you can see the publisher's printed price underneath. Price is correct for this RandomHouse first edition. DJ's spine tips have small chips and creasing at corners & spine edges, a very small neatly repaired closed tear at top edge. o/w a very bright and tight copy. A harder-to-find title in this series.
