Orig. boards preserved in a slip-case. In 1695. A.H. Francke founded the Hallische Waisenhaus which became instantly famous. Their secret tincture Essentia dulcis was one of the most desired medicines of 18th century Germany. The Madai manuscript, which was kept in secret for 200 years, throws light on on the ingredients and composition of the Geheimmittel and several Wundermedizinen.

Modern green buckram, spine gilt lettered. ¶ Good copy opf this valuable work of reference. Garrison & Morton 2034: "References to over 10,000 items, ‘arranged under 660 separate headings or articles,’ some with comments by the compiler".

Winona,: Watkin's Medical Co.,, 1909.. 64 pp. 8vo (15 x 23 cm.). Original illustrated wrappers (front cover lacks a small piece of the upper corner). With numerous illustrations. Watkins Medical Co., established in 1868, made some dozens of nostrums, many did contain heroin and alcohol.

With numeous plates. ¶ The orginal edition. "This bibliography fully describes the library of some 6000 books and pamphlets on electricity, magnetism, and telegraphy printed before 1886. Collected by Latimer Clark, the library was purchased in 1901 by Schuyler Skaats Wheeler, an American inventor and manufacturer, for presentation to the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. A great many of the books in this library, particularly the final two thousand items, concern telegraphy".

With 82 engravings in the text. ¶ Louis de Wecker was one of the greatest French ophthalmologists of his time. "He made significant contributions to the advancement of ophthalmology by introducing the ophthalmoscope, developing new surgical techniques, and inventing new instruments for operative surgery" (heirs of Hippocrates, 1977).--(Scattered foxing, especially in the fist 25 and last 20 pages; stamp of former owner on half-title).

Contemporary full marbled calf; spine with 5 raised bands, in compartments gilt decorated, gilt lettered on red morocco label (3 corners slightly bumped), marbled end-papers. With 2 folded engraved plates. ** First French translation of White's classic A treatise on the management of pregnant and lying-in-women" (1773). G&M 6270: "White was the first to state clearly in a text on midwifery the necessity of absolute cleanliness in the lying-in chamber, the isolation of infected patients, and adequate ventilation. He instituted the principle of uterine drainage, placing his patients in a sitting position shortly after delivery using a special bed and chair (both depicted in this work). White was also the first after Hippocrates to make any substantial contributions towards the solution of the aetiology and management of puerperal fever". A nice copy of this rare work.

South Bend,: The Whitehall Megrimine Co,, (n..d., ca. 1910).. A folded leave of grey paper (24,5 x 13 cm.), printed recto/verso in blue. ¶ A flyer for Whitehall's misbranded nostrum. It contained 211.88 grains of acetanilid to each avoirdupois ounce. Caffein, salol and cayenne pepper also were present. In 1916 the company was fined $50 and costs for false and fraudulent advertising.

Groningen,: G.J. Reits,, 1875.. 16 pp. 8vo (13 x 20 cm.). Original printed wrappers, uncut. With one large (41 x 34,5 cm.) and fine lithographed plate by D. Boots (Groningen). ¶ A very good copy in which the author describes his cattle delivery instruments that was crowned with silver in 1872 athe the "Landhuishoudkundig Congres te Utrecht". Very rare, only 4 copies in the WorldCat.

Richly illustrated with 262 line drawings and photographs of which 209 on 50 plates. ¶ Good copy of the best French work on the subject those days. Detailed description and photographs. The work is concluded with a bibliography and an extensive index on subjects and illustrations.

With plates. ¶ Witkowski, one of France's greatest historians of medicine, was together with Cabanès, one of the pioneer authors in France on historic pathology. The latter however, owing to a conflict with the Académie de Médecine of Paris, presented, in scientific exile, his 'cours de six lecons' on historic pathology at Brussels. --(Paper and cover age oned, but a good copy).

William Wood was (and still is) one of the leading American scientific publisher. Very usedfull for its collations. Indexes on author and subject.

With a frontispiece and 238 illustrations in the text. ¶ Best and most complete French edition of Wright's famous work. Wright was one of the founders of the British Archaeological Society and several British bibliophile societies.
