ATTRACTIVE STRAIGHT-GRAINED RED MOROCCO BY HATCHARDS (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in), covers with French fillet border, raised bands, compartments ruled in gilt, gilt lettering, upper edge gilt (fore-edge untrimmed, lower edge trimmed on the rough). With frontispiece portrait of Captain Barclay "in his Walking dress." Front pastedown with armorial bookplate. ◆Frontispiece a little browned, with offsetting to title, occasional small spot or stain elsewhere, but A FINE COPY--particularly clean and bright, with extremely comfortable margins, and in an unworn, lustrous binding. This work celebrates the 19th century phenomenon known as "pedestrianism" (also referred to as competitive walking or pedestrian racing), in which contestants would walk extraordinary distances over hours or even days. Pedestrian matches often took place in front of large groups of spectators for huge sums of money, causing intense rivalries, dramatic feats, and much gambling. Frontispiece engraving of the arms of bride and groom, engraved allegorical vignettes on title page and at end, woodcut head- and tailpieces and foliated initials, all done with considerable charm. ◆Spine and head edge just slightly faded, a couple of very small snags in backstrip, one page with mild thumbing, but A SUPERB COPY, EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN, FRESH, AND BRIGHT, both the text and original printed paper wrappers in an almost unbelievable state of preservation. This is a remarkably well-preserved Italian "wedding book," a souvenir produced for friends and guests of a noble bride and groom. This hagiographic parody was written by American poet and novelist Glenway Wescott (1901-87), and designed by his longtime partner, Monroe Wheeler (1899-1988). With 125 reproductions of West's etchings, and WITH AN ORIGINAL ETCHING as the frontispiece, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. ◆Faint smudge on upper board, light offsetting from images, but A FINE COPY with virtually no signs of use. Born in South Dakota, Levon West (1900-68) was a precociously talented artist who abandoned a Harvard business education to become an etcher. West learned his craft from the eminent artist and draughtsman Joseph Pennell, and gained overnight success when the New York Times published his etching of Charles Lindburgh's airplane, the Spirit of St. Louis, the day after its successful transatlantic flight. Graff 2008; Sabin 33685; Howes H785. ◆Spine and extremities rather rubbed, shallow chip to head of spine, top quarter of front board a little faded, boards just slightly splayed, isolated tiny marginal spots, but an excellent copy, internally fresh, clean, and rather bright, in a sound binding. This is a first-hand account of the opening of the coast-to-coast railroad from a Connecticut businessman who was among the first paying passengers to cross the continent by rail. Vivid and amusing, Humason's account begins in Boston, where he departed for Chicago, heading on to Omaha. This part of the trip passed in relative comfort, but things begin to change when the train reached the Rocky Mountains: conditions became decidedly more rustic, and Humason paints evocative scenes of rough, whiskey-soaked towns populated by rowdy… Read More

Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Porchester and three-character alphanumerical private library shelf location; title with the last name of the author written in ink in a contemporaneous hand. Henrey 1189. ◆Head and tail of spine with a little loss, the calf rather aged, boards with general overall soiling, edges and corners somewhat worn, but the restored binding quite sturdy; title slightly foxed, one opening with a few light stains, otherwise a surprisingly attractive copy internally--clean, fresh, and bright, with just the occasional negligible imperfection. Excellent contemporary brown three-quarter morocco by the Knickerbocker Bindery (stamp-signed on recto of rear free endpaper), raised bands, spines gilt in double-ruled compartments, gilt titling, marbled sides and endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed and MOSTLY UNOPENED. With 13 plates (mostly portraits), as called for. ◆Spines just slightly but uniformly sunned, but A VERY FINE SET, especially clean, bright, and fresh inside and out. This appealing set contains seven volumes of Whittier's poems, essays, and criticism and the two-volume "Life and Letters" by Samuel Pickard. A Quaker who edited a number of newspapers and spent time as a Massachusetts legislator, John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-92) invested as much passion in his abolitionist campaigning as he did in his poetry. London or Boston, 1847-78. Octavos of varying sizes. Publisher's blind-stamped cloth, (later) glassine dust wrappers, TWO VOLUMES UNOPENED. In excellent matching burgundy morocco-backed clamshell boxes by W. Root & Son, backs with raised bands, gilt compartments with central floral sprig and gilt titling, marbled lining. ◆Half the spines a little sunned, occasional small spots or dents to boards, but THE ORIGINAL BINDINGS ESSENTIALLY UNWORN, UNUSUALLY CLEAN, AND WITH THEIR EMBOSSED DECORATION ESPECIALLY SHARP. Leaves a shade less than bright because of paper stock, but very clean, with only isolated trivial spots; overall A VERY FINE GROUP, especially well preserved in their attractive boxes. This is an excellent selection of the more substantial poetry and prose publications by John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-92), attractively presented and well protected in their bespoke clamshell boxes. This is Wilde's best-known work and a justly celebrated play that sparkles from beginning to end with pre-eminent sophisticated wit. Day says that "the play's lasting appeal arises from some of the most brilliant dialogue of the English stage," and it is generally accepted as one of the two or three best modern comedies ever written. This is an exceptionally fine copy of Wilde's second hit play, successful like his other witty comedies, but with at least slightly more serious social and political content. Opening at the Haymarket Theatre in 1895 and continuing for 124 performances, it features as the title character a prominent politician in danger of losing his reputation because of a potentially damaging letter that the play's villain threatens to expose if the husband refuses to support the former's corrupt political agenda. Crandell A13.I.b. ◆One small, only vaguely visible discolored spot at head of spine, otherwise a mint copy, with leaves that open only reluctantly. This is one of a relatively small number of surviving copies of this limited edition, which Williams had privately printed when publishers balked at the explicit sexual content of the short stories. How many copies exist is a matter of dispute: according to Andreas Brown of the Gotham Book Market, about 80 of the 100 copies were destroyed in storage; however, Crandell indicates that as many as 136 copies may have been issued, with the extra copies available for the author's private use, but that perhaps all but about 10 numbered… Read More

Description:
New York: Kunst Editions, 1998. LETTER "Z" OF 26 LETTERED BOXES (of a total of 36 made). 203 x 330 mm. (8 x 13"). A fine rosewood box handcrafted by Bruce, Mark, and Frank Ginsberg of C. W. C. in St. Louis, Missouri, and filled with drinking accoutrements (see below). ◆In mint condition. In 1998 Dutch experimental novelist Arnon Grunberg created 36 boxes full of paraphernalia connected with the ritual of drinking, of which this is the last, copy "Z." The contents include approximately 300 cardboard coasters, illustrated by the author with wine glasses, beer mugs, pizza slices, and so on, each with a short snappy phrase in Dutch and English below the illustration. But that is not all. There is a collection of plain corks, provided by Grunberg's wine supplier in California's Napa Valley, along with the flamboyant signature of Grunberg himself on the inside of the box cover, where we find the "colophon." This informs us that our set, as one of 26 regular ones made, is to be used for "home, garden,… Read More
