(Cape Town: Purnell, 1965). 4to; original green rexine, lettered in gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (viii) + 242, incl. index; photographs in colour and monochrome. Dustwrapper slightly worn and soiled to edges, with lamination partially lifting; code to dustwrapper's spine panel and to front free endpaper; ink stamp to copyright page and final text page; light foxing to endpapers. Very good, in a fair to good dustwrapper. "All his life Dr. Wager has maintained his interest in his unusual hobby of delving into the life histories of the South African Frogs. ... The book is lavishly illustrated, and even if one is not particularly interested in frogs, the reader cannot fail to be attracted by the hundred monochrome and eighty coloured pictures. Animals are notoriously hard to photograph for they will seldom co-operate, stay still, face the right direction, eat or call, and immediately attempt to retreat to a safe refuge. "Most recent extinctions can be attributed, either directly or indirectly, to man; more specifically to man's demographic and technological expansion. ... Spine somewhat sunned; some light browning to endpapers and outer leaves; a little soiling to edges. The first major history of trade unionism in South Africa. "The most elementary of trade union principles demands that workers, irrespective of race or colour, shall have the recognised right to organise and to bargain collectively for the improvement of conditions of employment and other standards of life. The time is long overdue for the trade union forces to overcome any reaction in their ranks, to boldly follow the path of democracy and progress and to fight for the establishment in our country of internationally accepted trade union rights for all workers. Should they fail to do this they will be helping in their own destruction and in the collapse of the living standards and working conditions so painfully… Read More

This book is about the human element associated with these wrecks. The drama, the tragedies, the bravery, the sorrow, the seamanship, the discipline, the unsung heroes and the story of mutiny and murder, all of which have occurred along our Far South coast. The time span is from 1650 - 1950, when hundreds upon hundreds of sailing ships and steamships passed this coast, and were very much on their own if wrecked." .
