Description:
Menston, Yorkshire, England: Ilkey Literature Festival [printed by The Scolar Press], 1973. Folio in a case. Near fine. Folio size, 19 unnumbered pages, with facsimiles of the manuscripts of each poem. Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-1973) was an English-American poet, known for his variety of styles and subject matter, including politics, love, and religion; this collection of poems by various poets serves as a tribute to Auden's profound influence on the contemporary literature of the time and a celebration of the first Ilkley Literature Festival, which was opened by Auden during the last year of his life. Beginning the collection is Auden's poem "Lullaby", an unconventional love poem, followed by poems by ten other writers; each poet was asked to take a title or epigraph from Auden's published work as a starting point, and each offers a unique voice, connected through an admiration of Auden and the forms of his poetry. Included also are facsimiles of the manuscripts of each poem, printed on beautiful… Read More

Kirkwood: The Printery [Kay Michael Kramer, printer], 1974. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. One of 120 copies, oblong sixmo, 45 pp., signed by Charles Guenther, with prospectus. Written by the existentialist philosopher and French poet Jean Andre Wahl (1888-1974) during his time in La Sante prison under the German occupation during WWII, and then from the concentration camp at Drancy, near Paris. As Charles Guenther wrote in the Introduction, "Wahl...surely had an impact on philosophers and philosophy in his time...he also influenced French and American poets....for poetry is not only 'eternal'; it is evolving and mutable..." Published by The Printery, a Missouri private press which published limited editions of books; this was the fourth publication by The Printery, whose works were entirely hand-made. They had been awarded "major book awards for each of [their] previous three volumes" (n.b., from prospectus). London: Blackie & Son Ltd, 1921. Hardcover. Good +. Wain, Louis; Stewart, E.H.. Folio size, 62 pp. English artist Louis Wain (1860-1939) is known for his trademark anthropomorphic cats, who live in a rich, vibrant world and display playful personalities amidst their alphabetised actions. Llandogo, Monmouthshire: The Old Stile Press, 2006. Limited Edition. Stiff wraps. Fine. Kiggell, Ralph. Number VI of X of the Special Edition, folio size, [56] pp., signed by Ralph Kiggell, together with a suite of four signed prints. A selection of Chinese poems from "170 Chinese Poems" 1918, and "Chinese Poems" 1946, translated by Arthur David Waley (1889-1966). Waley performed the remarkable feat of teaching himself both classical Chinese and Japanese, and using those skills to translate the high points of literature from each culture for the English-reading public. He was the translator of "The Tale of Genji", as well as many other now well-known Chinese and Japanese pieces of literature, with many of his translations still in print today. He served as a sort of unofficial ambassador of the East to the West, and greatly admired their literature and art, although he never visited either country. The poems that artist Ralph Kiggell selected for this work move in chronological order, dating from… Read More

Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1892. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Two volumes (complete), "The Garfield Edition", octavo size, a total of 854 pp., with wrappers and publisher's box. Lewis "Lew" Wallace (1827-1905) was an American Union general as well as author of this famous novel, "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ". It was so well received upon publication that it surpassed "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (which, although many today believe fosters racism, at the time was seen as a powerful proponent for emancipation). Ben-Hur is considered by many to be "the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century" (n.b., quote from "Ben-Hur: The Book That Shook the World" by Amu Lifton (2009), as cited by Wiki). According to the web site of Slate Magazine, it sold "perhaps as many as a million copies in its first three decades in print". This set "The Garfield Edition", was named for President James Garfield who was assassinated in September of 1881, with this edition brought out in his honour. "President James… Read More

Description:
New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1930. 3rd Printing. Hardcover. Very good +. Octavo size, 150 pp., signed by Lynd Ward. American artist Lynd Ward (1905-1985) demonstrates his masterful storytelling in "God's Man", a wordless novel made with wood engravings which depicts a man's pact with the devil in exchange for a magical paintbrush which enabled him to gain fame as an artist; it progresses through 139 engraved woodblocks to show his downfall, temporary redemption, and ultimate payment of the price for the deal he made. Ward's wood engravings are rich in detail and emotion, and the story has a rhythm as the reader follows the character through interactions with dark, forbidding characters and uncaring urban streets; "God's Man" was the first American wordless novel, and Ward's work is often seen as a precursor to the modern graphic novel in its ability to convey character and feeling through the use of image alone. ___DESCRIPTION: Decorated paper over boards with a black cloth… Read More

Berkeley: Printed by The Professional Press, 1918. Soft cover. Very Good. Octavo size, 181 pp. Full title page: "History of the Berkeley Schools, An account of the School Systems of Berkeley from its establishment to date, with a detailed presentation of the special features in the various schools". Early, perhaps the first, written history of the schools in Berkeley. The author opens with a brief historical sketch of the land passing from the last Spanish governor of California in 1820 to Don Luis Peralta, who divided the land between his four sons. From this short tour through history he moves to the First Board of Education and then sets forth how the school system grew and developed, even listing the particulars of each school in the district - a fascinating glimpse into the educational history of an area that is now home to Cal, one of the great research universities. This copy has a prior owner name written at the top of the front wrap of J.E. Cuddeback; a gentleman of that name served as… Read More

Description:
Monmouthshire: The Old Stile Press, 2004. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Cour, Glenys. Copy A of the special edition, folio size, [56] pp., signed by Gwen Watkins and Glenys Cour, with prospectus. In his commendation, written to be printed in this book, Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, says "the intensely disciplined beauty of Vernon Watkins' poetry is one of the still largely undiscovered treasures of twentieth century British literature." For Katherine Raine, Watkins was a singer born. He saw how light is woven out of the darkness, life out of death, to perfect a whole greater than either. This beautiful poem (redolent of the Genesis creation story) has long been a favourite of the artist Glenys Cour who, with her sculptor husband, Ronald, was part of the famous group in Swansea that included Vernon Watkins and his close friend Dylan Thomas. Her richly powerful collage images help to make a journey through this large format book an extraordinary experience. She is, still today, a near… Read More

New York: Joseph Halle Schaffner (Mallette Dean, printer), 1968. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Number 31 of 50 numbered copies, quarto size, [44] pp. Carl August Sandburg (1878-1967), poet, writer, editor, and winner of three Pulitzer Prizes was (and still is) considered a "major figure in contemporary literature" (per Wiki). This book is a sort of "shared memory", being a lengthy letter to Sandburg in which the author, John Conrad Weigel, recounts his own boyhood memories which were apparently remarkably like Sandburg's. Mr. Weigel recounts the hard times his family went through, before social programs and when hard work and self-reliance were cherished ideals; when chickens were hatched beneath the stove, mattresses were made from corn husks, and "if underwear gave out, flour sacks filled the bill". This copy contains a photograph of Mr. Weigel at the opening of the lengthy letter and is signed by him on the half-title. Mr. Weigel gave his manuscript copy of the letter to Joseph Halle… Read More

San Francisco: The Book Club of California [printed by The Grabhorn Press], 1923. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. Lange, Dorothea; H. Von Schmidt. No. 136 of 400, quarto size, 140 pp. A tribute to Oscar Weil (1839-1921), born in New York and educated as a musician. When the Civil War started he enrolled in the Northern cause as a private and by the end of the war he was a Major; however, injuries received during the war meant he could no longer be a violinist. He therefore turned to composing, and settled in San Francisco where he also served as the music critic for the Argonaut newspaper; he was a man much loved by the community, as attested to by this memoir. Frontispiece a tipped-in photograph by Dorothea Lange from a painting of Oscar Weil by Olga M. Ackerman; when this photograph was taken, Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) was living in Berkeley, having recently married the western painter Maynard Dixon.
