Kemper, who himself wrote some articles on Rockingham County history -- has written his name and the title, dated April 21, 1888. Comprising a Table of Contents, and pp. 381-492. Uncommon in this format. Very Good binding.

An attractive set of Longfellow, in six quarto volumes; green cloth boards with gilt rule to the perimeters and "Longfellow" stamped in gilt to the front board of each volume; with discreet numbering at the spines. With all edges gilt. Engraved illustrations, both full page and vignettes in text, and charming titling. Volume 3 has some silverfishing to the front cover. A very restrained and handsome set. Very Good binding.

Chicago: Reilly & Britton, 1911. A memory book with quite a bit of penned information, belonging to Edward Wadsworth Gregory. Young Master Gregory was President of the Senior Class, as well as the Editor-in-Chief of "The Mirror". He lists his classmates, and teachers. He also lists his classes (History and Civics "Great discussions - Great class"; Geometry and Trigonometry "Don't ask any questions". Of particular charm is the Feb. 25, 1921 invitation to the Mystery Club at "Their Secluded Den" -- "Your Escort Will Call at Eight". There are Kodak Snap-shots as well. A nice picture of rural Virginia school life in the early 1920's. "Wads" Gregory was buried in Chase City, in 1981.

With a typewritten letter laid in, and a reproduction of one of the illustrations; the recipients of the letter had recently purchased one of the artworks featured in the book. A bright copy. Brown leather with gilt lettering. Very Good binding.

Devon: The Chevington Press, 1981. Limited Edition, numbered 23 of 50 copies. Quarter Leather. Near Fine binding. Signed by Wakefield below the colophon. 6 full page signed etchings along with 8 smaller etched head and tail pieces; exquisite work backed in tan calf with marbled paper over boards and an engraved title pastedown with etching on the upper cover. This is a recollection of the artist's fishing trips in the few years preceding publication. Tench Fisher is Wakefield's first book, closely followed with a more modest but equally impressive revision of Cutcliffe's classic, The Art of Trout Fishing on the Rapid Streams (1982). Wakefield studied under Leonard Baskin and his influence can be seen in Wakefield's early work. Near Fine binding.

An uncommon memoir, though Bud Robertson in his section of the Nevins bibliography considers many of Denny's reminiscences "suspect" [Nevins I, 80]. A clean First Edition copy with the engraved frontispiece of Burnside. Illustrated with many additional portraits throughout. This copy was lacking half of the spine; it has been rebacked with japanese tissue; still the left-hand side of the spine is lacking. Mylar has been custom cut to protect the binding. Good binding.

Large 8vo.; quarter vellum over marbled paper-covered boards; 86 pages, with title leaf and intials printed in red and in black; 0f 530 copies printed by the Bremer Prees, 250 copies, number i-ccl, of which this is number xiiii, were for Random House; there is some discoloration to the vellum spine, and the slipcase has old scotch-tape repairs. Very Good binding.

Charles Wesley Andrews was a pastor of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, only ten miles from Harpers Ferry, during the same time. An interesting account of the politics of the Church during this divisive period of American history. Portrait frontispiece. First Edition, with no marks of any kind. Publisher's blue cloth, with lettering and decoration stamped in black and gilt. Very Good binding.
