anticat16. London: Henry Colburn, 1848. Second Edition. Original green blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Pale yellow coated end papers. 8 pages of publisher's ads at rear, and an additional 24-page catalogue following them. Some light foxing, minor shelf wear to tips, spine a bit sunned, ownership inscription on front end paper dated 1848; overall, quite a pleasant copy. The first edition appeared in 1847. Ruminations on birds, cats, dogs, elephants, and a sizable section on dragons.

NY: Dial Press, 1929. First edition.. Dark blue cloth lettered in yellow, publisher's device in blind on front cover. Previous owner's name on the front end paper, faint edge wear, a very clean and attractive copy in the pictorial dust jacket. The dust jacket has a small piece from the base of the spine, some wear to the top of the spine, and a couple of closed tears at folds; the jacket has had some archival tape repairs to the reverse. Really quite a nice copy. The basis of the 1929 gangster film of the same title.

cat40a. London: Thacker/Calcutta: Thacker, Spink, 1898. Seventh Edition. Large format. Blue pictorial cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover designed and lettered in black and red. Frontispiece & 54 illustrations. Some rubbing of cloth and a bit of wear to corners, a bright very good copy. The first edition was published by Tower in 1892. Naval war in the future between England and France.

Los Angeles: Cas. W. Palm Co., 1894. First edition.. 478pp. Small 8vo. Full leather, spine lettered in gilt on a black label. Upper cover nearly loose, spine worn and only part of lower label intact, some scribbling on first few leaves, very good otherwise. Ownership signature of H.G.W. Dinkelspiel on inner covers (presumably Henry George Washington Dinkelspiel, Lawyer, California Legislature 1890-98). Not common in the first edition; a second edition was published in 1899.

Toronto: Musson/London: Hodder & Stoughton, [c.1911].. 272pp. Red-brown cloth designed in black, spine lettered in gilt. Frontispiece. Inner hinges cracked & loose, but a very bright, very good copy otherwise. "Musson" at the base of the spine. This is an uncommon Canadian edition.

London & NY: Macmillan, 1877. Second Edition.. Original brown pebbled cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Black coated end papers. 786pp. One leaf of ads at the rear. Frontispiece of "The Logical Machine". Some white paint spots and light wear at the lower spine, in general a clean and attractive very good copy. First published in two volumes in 1874, this is the one-volume Second Edition of 1877. This edition contains a substantial new Preface (pgs. [vii] - xxvi) dated 1877. The Logical Machine depicted in the frontispiece [also known as the "Logical Piano", first introduced in 1870] is discussed at some length (pgs. 107 - 114) including some discussion of the theories and works of George Boole. A work of some significance in the history of the development of the modern computer.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1982. First edition.. Grey boards designed in gilt, white cloth spine lettered in gilt. Green end papers. A fine copy in a lightly worn dust jacket, some tiny tears at edges and some noticeable rubbing to the spine. Inscribed and signed from Kinsella on the half-title page, dated 1984. A collection of five stories, the first being "Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa", which is rewritten from "Shoeless Joe Comes to Iowa" published in his earlier book of short stories [Oberon Press, Ottawa, 1980]. The movie version, "Field of Dreams", was released in 1989.

Kilkenny: Kilkenny Journal Limited, (1953).. 93pp., stapled, porous printed wrappers. Fading to spine and front wrapper, short tears at the base of the spine, a clean very good copy. Uncommon.

London: John Long, 1903. First edition.. cat40a. Red pictorial cloth designed in black & white, spine lettered in white. Frontispiece & a great many small illustrations in the text. Cloth split along the rear hinge, shelf wear to corners, front fly leaf removed, spine somewhat faded, but all lettering still legible; a solid, very good copy otherwise. See Locke: Spectrum of Fantasy, for a description of an identical copy. 12 stories of crazy inventions, including numerous science fiction themes. Quite uncommon.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition.. Blue cloth lettered in gilt, oval pictorial paper label on front cover. Front free end paper lacking, pen mark on half-title, moderate fading of the spine and shelf wear to edges (rear hinge worn through at one point); in general, still a decent looking, clean, very good copy, with the spine lettering quite bright. An uncommon collection of short stories.

cat40a. NY: Harper, 1896. First American edition. Green decorative cloth, designed and lettered in beige and gilt. Ownership label on inner front cover, some light shelf wear, a bright and attractive, very good copy. The British edition was published the same year by Hutchinson. A clever fantasy in the mode of F. Anstey; Jupiter calls a man on the telephone and gives him the chance to start over as a young man - with predictibly disastrous results.

Light fraying to spine ends, some modest shelf wear, a very good copy. Presuably the second edition, as there was one published in 1921. Of hounds and hunting, with local history and anecdotes.

West Chesterfield: Girs Press, 1971. First edition. . Stiff brown pictorial wrappers in a plain dust jacket, machine-numbered on the front cover. Illustrated end papers. A little bumping to corners, but a fine copy. This is copy number 92 of an edition of 333 copies, and is one of 133 containing a lithograph signed by the artist, Maria A. Girs. Stankiewicz was Professor of Political Science at the University Of British Columbia.

NY: Mascot, 1894. First edition. Rebound in later wrappers from Pratt's Circulating Library. Old stain to lower page edges at spine, corner chipped from the preserved back cover (which bears ads for Mascot books); very good otherwise. This appears to be a romance novel for the most part, dealing with forbidden love for another man's wife etc. Not in Wright. Information from WorldCat suggests that this book was issued as No. 1 in the Thistledown Series, but evidence of this was likely on the original front cover, not present here.

Ganges: Orphan Press, 1973.. Original decorative self-wrappers. A 16-page booklet. Issued as Empty Belly #2, this is copy #190 of an edition of 200. Crease in front wrapper, some light edge wear, very good condition. Verse by John Stevens Wade, John Jacob, Harold Schneider, Lois Ellis, Charles Tidler, Barry Edgar Pilcher, Lyn Lifshin and Alan Altany. A scarce book.
