All that regards regimen and health being furnished by medical friends, and revised by Sir Anthony Carlisle, F.R.S. Vice President of the College of Surgeons." Octavo, 11 plates (10 in colour), the colour plates bound as matched pairs with the upper plates featuring peek-a-boo windows to reveal the image beneath; shaken, but a fine copy in contemporary half green morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Description:
London: Methuen, 1934. Wall, Dorothy. First edition of this scarce and finely-produced work. Although published a year after the first Blinky Bill title, the illustrative style of Bridget and the Bees harks back to Wall's delicate drawings for J.J. Hall's The Crystal Bowl, published in 1921, and suggests that it was written and illustrated well before its publication date. This is the rare English edition, which was followed by an American edition in 1935. Large octavo, eight plates in colour (including the frontispiece), rebound in half brown cloth retaining original papered boards, endpapers renewed, a good sound copy.

Description:
Racine (Wisconsin): Whitman Publishing, 1935. First Edition. Rare pirate 'pop-up' edition of Dorothy Wall's classic story about the young koala called Blinky Bill. This text is taken from the first Blinky Bill story, with all the associated images, and includes "magic action" pop-up interpretations of three of these. Such was the international appeal of Dorothy Wall's character that only two years after the appearance of the first Blinky Bill story, this pop-up book was published in America. Ironically this pirated publication, which never appeared in Australia, was protected by copyright and two separate patents! [Muir, 7845.]. Small square octavo, three double-page colour pop-up plates; a very good copy in the original stiff pictorial wrappers.

Description:
Sussex: Pear Tree Press, 1902. Edmund Waller (1606-1687) was respected for his command of language and prowess as an orator. The romantic poems featured in this rare edition are among his more sensitive works and form a pleasing contrast to the Royalist verse penned during the English Civil war. The present edition is limited to 300 copies and is printed on hand-made paper with uncut fore and bottom edges. A confident and stylised work. Octavo, quarter cloth with paper label; a near fine copy.

Description:
London: Isbister and Company, 1894. To describe "The Sunday Magazine" as a religious periodical is to confine it unnecessarily. Edited by Reverend Benjamin Waugh (1839 -1908), founder of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, "The Sunday Magazine" is a publication that broaches everything from art and literature to travel and poetry. Some of the Reverend's most famous hymns first appeared within these pages also. At unexpected points, one turns the page to find an illustration truly beautiful. 'Fetters are the emblem of captivity, the ensigns of restraint. Our dogs we tie, our criminals we handcuff, and formerly we chained our lunatics and our books.' (C.E. Gildersome-Dickinson, "Chained Books", p. 529). Quarto, bound in gilt-stmaped decorated green boards, all edges gilt, 856 pages, a near fine copy.

Fine press publication regarding the work of Beatrice Webb (1858 -1943) and Sidney Webb (1859 -1947), noted English Fabian Socialists who visited Australia in 1898 addressing the United Trades and Labour Council in Adelaide. "Mrs Webb... remarked that public opinion in Australia and in all the colonies was strangely backward on the subject of factory legistlation. It should be the business of all trade unionists to destroy the idea that unregulated individual bargaining was the best for the worker. It was the restriction of the hours of labour that guaranteed the personal freedom of those who had to work..." [Beatrice Webb, Adelaide, 1898.]. Octavo, original string-bound paper wrappers, 8 pages, 2 photographic portraits, a fine copy.

Beautiful art deco picture book written and illustrated by Gwen White. "The dolls in this book are all real ones, and they have been drawn either from those in the Museums or elsewhere. They vary in size from the little black Congo Doll which is five inches high, to the grand one in the purple dress and straw bonnet, which is quite three feet high. They are all dolls which children have played with, and are not the kind used as idols or puppets. In most cases they are dressed in the costumes of the period to which they belong, so the frocks would be splendid for fancy dress parties.

Description:
Melbourne: Mutual Provedoring Co. Ltd, 1892. First Edition. Born in Lambeth, cookery writer Harriet Frances Wicken (1847 - 1937) emigrated from England to Australia in 1886. Having studied at the National Training School for Cookery in South Kensington in London shortly after it opened and acquiring a diploma, Harriet Wicken published her first book, the 'Kingswood Cookery Book', in 1885. An expanded Australian edition of her English cookery book assisted in securing her the position of head 'instructress' of domestic economy at the Sydney Technical College and ensured continuity for her publishing career. According to the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography', in other small cookbooks that appeared during the 1890s, such as The Cook's Compass (Sydney, 1890) to promote the Sydney grocers J. G. Hanks & Co, and Fish Dainties (Melbourne, 1892) for the Melbourne Mutual Provedoring Co., or Recipes of Lenten Dishes (1896) as a seasonal gesture, Harriet Wicken stressed simplicity and her favourite 'dainty'… Read More

Description:
Berlin: Carl Friedrich Amelang, 1821. A beautiful work for the education of the young. The fine large coloured plates in the atlas depict mammals (including the kangaroo), birds, amphibians, fish, and insects, as well as botany and minerals. The images were drawn from nature by Georg Bretzing, Ludwig Meyer, Muller and Weber, and engraved by Bretzing, Guimpel, Meno Haas, Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer, Ludwig Meyer, Tissot and Wachsmann. This delightful assembly was the work of the reformist theologian Friedrich Philipp Wilmsen (1770-1831), a pastor in Berlin who was both friend and confessor to the great composer Felix Mendelssohn. Wilmsen was an enthusiastic writer of works for the young across a wide range of subjects, partly influenced by Swiss theologians including Johann Jakob Hesse who had begun a tradition of writing indigenous Bible stories for Swiss children characterised by a religious tolerance and teaching across all economic divides. The comprehensive texts cite references to Lichtenstein,… Read More
