Description:
Stanford, California: Stanford University Press, 1998. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This book focuses on the cultural processes by which the idea of a Yugoslav nation was developed and on the reasons that this idea ultimately failed to bind the South Slavs into a viable nation and state. The author argues that the collapse of multinational Yugoslavia and the establishment of separate uninational states did not result from the breakdown of the political or economic fabric of the Yugoslav state; rather, that breakdown itself sprang from the destruction of the concept of a Yugoslav nation. Had such a concept been retained, a collapse of political authority would have been followed by the eventual reconstitution of a Yugoslav state, as happened after World War II, rather than the creation of separate nation-states." Octavo. Original gray cloth binding, with silver titles. Tiny remainder mark to the bottom edge; else fine in a fine dust jacket.

Description:
San Francisco: The Book Club of California, 2009. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is copy 14 of 300 copies signed by Richard Wagener. Additionally inscribed and dated by Wagener to Gordon Van De Water, past president of the Zamorano Club, once on a prefatory blank leaf and again on the colophon. One of the leading American wood engravers, Richard Wagener has created a visual account of his wanderings throughout California in this lavish new work. In thirty original prints and short prose pieces describing them, he chronicles a journey that begins and ends in Los Angeles with stops in the San Jacinto Mountains, the Antelope Valley, Sonoma County, and the Sierra Nevada. Like John Muir and Gary Snyder, Wagener is a wanderer, explorer and observer of California, creating a poetry of place through both words and images, all born of actual experience. Not since Paul Landacre mastered the aesthetic and technical challenges of wood engraving in the early twentieth-century has any California artist…

Description:
A single-sided flyer for a GI Teach-In held Saturday, August 10, [1968] at Provo Park in Berkeley, California. The flyer features a black and white photographic image of a weary soldier leaning against a tree and smoking a cigarette with the caption: Bring Him Home. The program for the event advertised G.I. speakers, Vietnam veterans, an open mic, and bands. The flyer states: "During the April 27th Mobilization Against the War, servicemen from bases throughout the Bay Area participated in the antiwar actions. This was the first time that active G.I.'s joined with students to protest the war. We must involve these GIs, we must encourage their opposition; they are being sent to kill and be killed in a senseless war." The event was hosted by the Student Mobilization Committee, which was formed in 1966 to coordinate opposition to U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam among college and high school students. Originally named The Vietnam Day Committee, the SMC organized protests on campuses and in various…
