Description:
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Impressive and unusually large inscribed three-quarter-length photograph of the German composer, later "Master of Bayreuth," from his sojourn in Vienna in 1861, credited to Ludwig Angerer (1827–1879), imperial court photographer in Vienna. Autograph musical quotation to lower margin—an excerpt from an unidentified composition, one staff, four measures, 3/4, without key signature; dedication as text underlay and amusingly incorporating the composer's name: "Seinem Seraphinenpüppchen [to Seraphine, his little doll)] Richard Wagner."  The printed header, "Album der Zeitgenossen" [Album of contemporaries], identifies this issue of the mounted photograph as from the series of the same name that Franz Hanfstaengl (1804–1877), court photographer in Munich, compiled over the second half of the 1850s.  17 x 13.25 inches (43 x 33.5 cm). In very fine condition. Framed. An extremely rare document, particularly noteworthy for the musical quotation."When Wagner came to… Read More

New York: The Peter Norton Family Christmas Project, 1997. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Bound pop-up book, with offset lithographs and five laser-cut, pop-up silhouettes on wove paper, 1997. 238x213 mm; 9 3/8x8 3/8 inches, full red leather binding as issued. Edition of 4000. For many years, the Peter Norton family commissioned an art edition to celebrate the holidays. This book was privately published and gifted to friends. Another copy of this book is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.Kara Walker is best known for her controversial large-scale black silhouette cut-outs which are, in this book, miniaturized. Her use of silhouettes is significant and ironic as she juxtaposes traditional Victorian silhouettes with depictions of violence, hyper-sexuality, and racism. Walker's work deals directly with African American history in the Antebelleum South, contributes to current dialogues on the representation of Black identities, and speaks to the way that the… Read More

Description:
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A excised page from a Christie's New York 19th and 20th Century Prints auction catalogue (28 April 1979) signed in full "Andy Warhol" beneath the reproduced image of his iconic Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup. In April 1979, the original obtainer of this item heard Andy Warhol was signing copies of Interview at Fiorucci and went after attending the Christie's morning auction. Upon meeting Warhol, the artist noticed the auction catalogue and inquired if any of his artwork was included and subsequently signed this page. The set of ten color screenprints advertised on the present page were based on the Campbell's soup can, one of Andy Warhol's best-known icons. In 1962 Warhol produced a series of thirty-two silkscreen paintings depicting the cans—one canvas for each variety of soup available at the time. He continued to produce images of the soup cans for more than two decades, a process of repetition that reflects his characteristic interest in mimicking the… Read More

London: Studio Vista Ltd., 1971. First paperback edition. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Small 8vo. 160 pp. Signed "Andy Warhol" in bold black ink to the titlepage. A few thin scratches and creases to wrapper laminate, otherwise about fine.In 1961 a fashionable commercial artist named Andy Warhol created an artistic furor in New York with his deadpan versions of the Campbell's Soup can. Since then he has become the most talked about but least understood artist of the late 20th century. Warhol made acceptable the use of industrial techniques in the creation of paintings obsessed with modern clichés--car crashes, Coke bottles, sex symbols such as Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor. At the same time, his films-- Blowjob, Sleep, Chelsea Girls, Lonesome Cowboys --forced us to look at the object/subject, transformed the bizarre into the banal, and remade the form and content of cinematic experiment and production.Originally published in 1971, Peter Gidal's Andy Warhol was the first book written on Warhol's… Read More

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A green glass posy holder with the etched inscription "To Oscar Love Bosie" and measuring approximately 1 x 7 cm. Small crack to rear lip of the glass, else fine. Resembling a small vase, the posy holder was romanticized as a fashion accessory and typically used to hold the flowers brought to ladies by their courting 'gentleman callers'. Acquired from a small regional UK auction house, there is no recorded provenance with this diminutive Wilde relic. The etching is quite clearly of the period and given the unique nature of the names, we have no reason to doubt that it was indeed an item which passed between them. The English poet and journalist, Lord Alfred Douglas, also known as "Bosie," was Wilde's partner for the last decade of the writer's life.  Douglas's father, the 9th Marquess of Queensberry, strongly disapproved of their relationship, and was at the center of the libel lawsuit that ultimately led to Wilde's imprisonment for sodomyThe posy holder is… Read More
