In the letter dated 1942, Weber offers Charles congratulations on his marriage. Weber comments on his cousin no longer being lonely. "One can read the greatest books... but reading is not living. Life without human (and (social) [sic] contact is pretty barren." Weber continues by commenting on an "excellent appreciation of my work in the ‘Morning Freiheit' by Dr. Kloomok... his is one of the best Jewish writers...." Dr. Isaac Kloomok was a scholar who wrote about Jewish artists, including Weber and Marc Chagall. Weber writes of current events. "At the moment the news from Russia is not so very good, and you know how grieved I am, but in the end the Nazi bastards will be conquered and sent to hell for all time!...." As soon as I'm done with this dreadful picture we're joining up for a few weeks in Spain. We'll be following Ordonez [bull fighter], which means the south for the first ten days of September. I was in Valencia for the feria and for a few more of Antonio's dates after that...After Spain--? Probably London. Somebody sent me a really good play from America called ‘The Guide', and I expect to be producing it in London either before or just after the pantomime season... Also, there's a play of my own called ‘Brittle Glory'. If I can cast it right, I'll be doing that, too. For… Read More

Description:
Minor White discusses aspects of photography in two typed letters to his former student, Stuart Oring. Typed Letter Signed, on "aperture" magazine stationery, New York City, 4to ( 8 x 11 inches) Nov. 19, 1967. White was one of the founders of the photography magazine, "aperture," in 1952. White says, "there is no written material for the Evaluating Photography course" and that his book "now called Conscious Photography, is in a first draft stage... It seems that you should come here and spend a few days with the MMS." He later writes, "I will give you all the help I can. A couple of days in personal talk will be most fitting." White doesn't agree with Oring's premise that photography can be used as a controlled visual communication process. White writes, "This seems redundant... photography communicates like mad every minute of the day, and while it works as other media do is purely academic nonsense." He signs, "Cheerio, Minor." The second typed letter on plain stationery, Dec. 2, 1967, is a… Read More

Description:
Letters of Stanford White are rarely available and ours to noted American artist Thomas Wilmer Dewing is particularly noteworthy. White writes to Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851-1938), American painter and White's friend, commenting on Dewing's exhibit in March 1900 at the Montross Gallery in New York. White writes that the exhibit, "is perfectly bully. My only regret was that you did not have the big Cheney picture and the panel of your little girl and the two pussy cats which Freer has...." Overall, White thinks Dewing's show is "beautiful." In the next sentence White includes a name in holograph difficult to decipher but possibly Montross, the gallery owner. "I think [holograph name] ought to have a more noticeable sign than he had. I did not know he was on the top floor and went rushing all around trying to find him...." In the final sentence, White refers to "the Detroit matter." As I understand, everything is getting along swimmingly in the Detroit matter." He signs, "Stanford." White refers to the… Read More

He won the Pulitzer Prize for "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1948 and for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 1955. In addition, "The Glass Menagerie" (1945) and "The Night of the Iguana" (1961) received New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards. His 1952 play, "The Rose Tattoo," received the Tony Award for best play. He moved to New Orleans in 1939 and changed his name to "Tennessee" for the state of his father's birth. Williams signs each check in full, "Tennessee Williams" under his printed name.
