[xvi]+383+[1]+31]pp, engraved frontis [ by J Mynde ], title in red & black, The Defensio has a separate title page showing the Radcliffe Camera in vignette, leather rather rubbed & with the upper hinge cracking, corners bumped, pp131-134 partly detached at the gutter leaving the fore edge a little worn, text unmarked & in near fine condition. Old ownership signature of John Davie dated 1757 on the endpaper. Second edition of Simpson's useful edition of Xenophon of Athens' Memorabilia, or defence of Socrates, complete with the Apology. The Greek text appears in the upper part of the page, the latin translation by Johannes Leunclavius [ 1533 - 1593 ] below. Simpson used the earlier editions of Johann August Ernesti & Aemilius Portus as reference.

No copies on COPAC or at the British Library The Anabasis contains Xenophon's account of his own & Cyrus' campaign to dethrone Cyrus' brother, Artaxerxes. When Cyrus is killed Xenophon takes over command of the Greek troops & leads them across Persia.
