Description:
London: Printed by R. Everingham for the author, and are to be sold by T. Parkhurst and N. Simmons,, 1677. First edition, in which Yarranton, an engineer and agriculturalist, "proposed many schemes of improvement: fire prevention, establishing linen manufacture, ironworks in Hampshire, a land bank to finance trade, and public granaries. He suggested making the Warwickshire Stour navigable up to Shipston and the Cherwell to Banbury so as to shorten the distance for carriage of goods between navigations in the Severn and Thames catchments. Another proposal concerned the River Dee up to Bangor Bridge, Flintshire. These to some extent anticipated the great changes brought about a century later by the development of still-water canals. His ideas came partly from his observations abroad in 1667, especially in Holland and Flanders" (ODNB). A second part followed in 1681. Quarto (194 x 145 mm). Contemporary unlettered mottled sheep. With 8 folding copper-engraved plates. Spine ends worn, front joint cracked,… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons,, 1888. One of the last flashpoints of the Great Game, inscribed by the author First edition, presentation copy, inscribed to Richard Assheton Cross, first viscount Cross, on the verso of the half-title: "Viscount Cross with the Author's Kind Regards. 11 June 1888", also with the engraved armorial bookplate of the Cross family on the front pastedown. This is a first-hand account of a crucial period in the Russian conquest of Central Asia and The Great Game. "The book describes the activity of the commission by a British officer, in 1885 in northwestern Afghanistan and then their long travel back to Lahore through Afghanistan. The closing chapters deal with the return of the mission in 1887 for the actual demarcation of the frontier" (Yakushi). Yate also outlines the Panjdeh incident, an armed engagement between the Emirate of Afghanistan and the Russian Empire in 1885. Hopkirk described the Pandjeh incident as one of the last "flashpoints" of the Great… Read More

Description:
Boston: Joseph W. Hamilton,, 1887. First edition, inscribed by the author to a fellow Maine suffragist on the front free endpaper, "Mrs. Ann Greely, with kind regards, the author, Dec. 25 1890", with Greely's book label to front pastedown. This edition is now uncommon, especially inscribed, the present copy in notably attractive condition. The recipient, Ann Jarvis Greely (1831-1914), would have been known to Yates through their shared engagement in the suffrage lecture circuit. Greely was active in her local suffrage movement and organised a series of suffrage lectures and a "woman's rights" ball in Ellsworth in 1857, which included Susan B. Anthony as a speaker. From her mid-20s she was, like Yates, an avowed and outspoken temperance worker and was active in the anti-slavery movement. In 1851 she opened the Old Stand, a millinery shop on Main Street, thereby becoming one of the first recognized businesswomen of Maine. Yates (1857-1942) was licensed to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church and… Read More

Description:
Hong Kong: Cathay Limited,, 1952. First edition, first printing, of this scarce, chatty handbook affirming Hong Kong's reputation as a Mecca for travellers in the post-war tourism boom. Of particular interest are the large number of advertisements offering a feel for life in the territory during the early 1950s. Copies of the first edition are seldom encountered in commerce, and WorldCat notes just two institutionally (British Library and Toronto Public Library). In her guide, Helen Eva Yates (1900-1993) purposefully adopts a relaxed tone perhaps better suited to the emerging middle-class travel market than some other contemporary guides. "Perhaps you hope to have a brocade evening coat made to order? Or a summer Shantung suit? A handsome camphorwood chest is just what you want to store your treasures in. Dad has long wanted a carved ivory chess set. Or you may be plotting to take home a heavenly trousseau set of silk lingerie for your sister's wedding. Description:
London: Smith, Elder, and Co.,, 1843. A talented Scottish medic in Egypt First edition of this spirited and engaging account, illustrated with simple but appealing illustrations, lithographed by Hullmandel from Yates's own sketches. "A very interesting work by a medical man who travelled extensively in Egypt c. 1840... Yates also provides an extensive general commentary on political events in Syria, Crete and Egypt in addition to the ordinary account of his travels" (Blackmer). The Scottish doctor William Holt Yates remains a frustratingly shadowy figure. We do know that he was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society (admitted 1834) and president of both the Royal Medical and Royal Physical Societies of Edinburgh, and senior physician to the General Dispensary at Aldersgate in the City, during a time when the young David Livingstone was taking extracurricular studies there. The publication of his book was timely as there was growing interest in Egypt following the Oriental Crisis of 1840, when… Read More

Description:
Dublin: Cuala Press,, October 1943. Signed by Yeats's wife First Cuala Press edition, limited issue. Number 40 of 50 copies, and, though uncalled for, this copy is signed by "George" Hyde-Lees, (1892-1968), the author's wife. Mosada was Yeats's first published work, and was first published in 1886 as an offprint from the Dublin University Review. That edition, of around 100 copies, is now "exceedingly rare" (Wade p. 18). Yeats's wife was originally known as "Georgie", until Yeats declared the name insufferable. George managed the Cuala Industries with Yeats's sisters Lily and Lolly after her husband's death, increasingly on her own as Lily's health failed and Lolly died suddenly in 1940. The second separate printing of the text, it is based on the text as it appeared in The Wanderings of Oisin (1889), and incorporating the corrections that were made by the author in his own copy. Octavo. Original cream card wrappers, titles to front wrapper in black. With the original glassine jacket. Frontispiece… Read More

Dublin: The Cuala Press,, 1941. First edition, first impression, presentation copy from Georgie Yeats, number 17 of 500 copies. This copy has a Cuala Press compliments slip inscribed "Sent at the request of Mrs W. B. Yeats" and also two pieces of Cuala ephemera: one Cuala Press advertisement for the Broadsides New Series, and a card reprinting from A Broadside "The Midland Toast: Long road and stoney ditches / And here's to nice girls / And to hell with riches" beneath a coloured woodcut by Jack Yeats. This publication is a collection of letters from Shaw and Yeats to Florence Farr (1860-1917). Farr was an actress, director, journalist, women's rights activist, and chief adept of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. She attended Queen's College, the first woman's college in England, and alongside this work and a second novel published several academic texts on occult history and literary theory, and a feminist treatise, Modern Woman: Her Intentions, in 1910. Description:
London: Elkin Mathews; Elkin Mathews and John Lane,, 1892 & 1894. First editions, sole printings. The Rhymers' Club was founded by W. B. Yeats in 1890 as an informal poetry society that met at the Cheshire Cheese pub in Fleet Street (where Samuel Johnson, in an earlier age, also used to drink). This set includes both volumes published by the group, featuring poetry by Yeats and 12 other contributors: Ernest Dowson, Edwin J. Ellis, G. A. Greene, Arthur Cecil Hillier, Lionel Johnson, Richard le Gallienne, Victor Plarr, Ernest Radford, Ernest Rhys, T. W. Rolleston, Arthur Symons, and John Todhunter. The collections include the first book appearance of Yeats's "Lake Isle of Innisfree", and the first British book appearance of the quintessential poem of the decadent 1890s, Ernest Dowson's "Non sum qualis eram bonae sub regno Cynarae" (with its refrain..."I have been true to thee, Cynara, in my fashion"...). Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company, , 1949. What can be explained is not poetry First edition thus, number 48 of 375 copies signed by the author, including Yeats's complete poetical output, and a variorum of the his textual changes. Published posthumously, though with pages signed by the poet before his death included, the edition was personally overseen by Yeats's widow, Georgie. Throughout the 1930s, Yeats had scrupulously worked to collect, revise, arrange, and edit his complete poetry for an Edition de Luxe to be published by Macmillan. This project was abruptly terminated by the author's death and the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. The editorial work, however, did not go to waste, and the present edition, using Yeats's proofs, came to be known as "definitive". 2 volumes, tall octavo. Original green cloth over bevelled boards, spines lettered in gilt, author's monogram on front covers in gilt, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edge untrimmed. Description:
London: Lawrence & Bullen, Limited,, 1897. Sir Hugh Walpole's copy First edition, first issue binding with "Lawrence & Bullen" at the foot of spine. This copy is from the library of Sir Hugh Walpole (1884-1941), with his Brackenburn gilt-embossed dark red paper book label on the front pastedown. Walpole and Yeats moved in the same literary circles in London; both attended the literary gatherings of Sylvia Lynd, the poet and fellow judge for The Book Society club, established by Walpole in 1921. With The Secret Rose, Yeats was at the height of his powers as a prose mythographer, bringing together the two key loci of his imagination, the Celtic folklore of his native Ireland and the alchemical mysteries with which he became familiar through his interactions with the Golden Dawn in London and Paris. These are represented by two characters, later the subject of their own books but here appearing for the first time: Red Hanrahan, the wandering poet (or "gleeman") whom Yeats stirringly remembered in The… Read More
