[Tokyo]: The Hokuseido Press, 1935. A collection of three dramatic works by the famed Japanese writer (1887-1974). Included are"Lord Dawa," "Chink Okichi," and "Crown of Life." Translation is by Glenn W. Shaw. This is a Very Good copy of the True First Edition. [It was reprinted in 1957] A rare book. Stunning wrap-around illustrated cloth binding in red, black, white, green,and gray. Clean text; xviii, 358 pages. Fore and bottom edges are rough-cut. Frontis photograph of an actor appearing as Lord Dawa. Endpapers have some offsetting and there is some very mild bumping to the tips. The dustjacket is complete. Darkened, with edgewear. Itis quite presentable but there are old cello tape repairs to the back; this should be rectified with some minor conservation work. In an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. New York: John Day, 1956. The second postwar novel by the French/Japanese writer (1897-1975) who attained initial fame in the Parisian artistic world, followed by some time in prison in Japan. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition. Originally written in French, it has been translated by Emman Craufurd. Green paper boards, illustrated with a blindstamped carp on the front; dark orange linen spine. The dustjacket is complete and unclipped, showing some rubbing, several closed tears, and a chip at the top of the spine/front panel. An interesting read, if a bit sentimental for current tastes. A presentable copy; in an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.

Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1971. Jack B. Yeats (1871-1957) was the brother of Nobel Prizewinner William Butler. Here are eight drawings by the Irish artist dating from 1908-1913, issued here in a Fine Press edition of 300 copies. Blue cloth binding with a paper label, also one of his drawings. Published in Dublin in 1971, with the drawings hand-coloured, and an introduction by Anne Yeats. The pages are unopened. Hints only a some bumping, and several scattered spots on two pages. Dublin & London: The Talbot Press Ltd. & T. Fisher Unwin, Ltd., 1918. John Butler Yeats (1839-1922) has been somewhat ecipsed by his famous sons - the poet William and the artist Jack B. Educated for the law, he soon left that profession and had a distinguished career as a portrait painter. These essays, published near his death, are quite strongly opinionated! This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. An uncommon title. Dark blue cloth binding with titling on paper labels on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 95 pages, with four pages of publisher adverts in the rear. Light rubbing to tips and spine ends. The spine label has a torn edge which does not affect the text. Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1972. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition, which is LIMITED to 500 copies, of which this is Number 134. Light gray paper-covered boards with titling in black on the front cover; paper label on the spine. Clean text; x, 77 pages, unopened. One corner has been bumped; else a Fine copy. The plain vellum dustwrapper is present, with a darkened spine, a tiny chip at the foot, and a small tear on the top of the rear panel. In an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Hard Cover. London: A.H. Bullen, 1904. Yeats wrote these short plays for the Irish National Theatre and they were performed in 1903 and 1904. He states that "Both are founded on Old Irish Prose Romances" but Quercus notes how they also resemble Japanese Kabuki. "On Baile's Strand" is also one of the most bleak of Yeats dramas. Gray/green paper-covered boards with a green cloth spine with paper label. Clean text; 117 pages. Corners are bumped and the spine label has a chip (not affecting title). London: A.H. Bullen, 1904. Containing three of the plays Yeats wrote for the newly-established Irish Literary Theatre (later the Abbey), including "Cathleen ni Houlihan" which was the first production (1904). This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. [Wade, 68] Light green/gray paper boards with a green linen spine and a paper label. Clean text; 83 pages. There are a few pages to the rear that remain unopened. Bumped corners and rubbing to the head and foot of the spine. The fragile paper label is chipped on one side and the head, but this does not affect readability. A sold copy, containing one of the greatest of Yeats plays. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Stratford-Upon-Avon: Shakespeare Head Press, 1911. This play in verse is part of a cycle based upon Cuchulain, of Ireland's heroic age. First published iby Cuala n 1910; this is a Very Good copy of the First Theatrical Edition. from a year later. Softbound. Sixteen pages in sewn wraps of gray paper. Titling in black on the front. Hardly any edgewear, but two chips on the spine, which is tender due to a separation.. First Edition Thus. Soft Cover. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1908. These collected volumes by Ireland's Nobel Prize winner were first published in 1906 and 1907. These are Very Good (Plus) copies of a Later Printing of the First American Edition. Volume One ("Lyrical Poems") is from 1908; Volume Two ("Dramatical Poems") is from 1911. Dark blue cloth highly decorated in gilt on the spines. Clean texts; xii, 338 pages with two pages of adverts in the rear; and ix, 524 pages, with four pages of adverts. Although issued at different times, these are often seen as a set, and these both have the signature of editor/educator Arthur Willis Leonard on the FFEP. Showing light usage, with bumping and some light rubbing at the margins; gilt on the spines is a bit dulled. Volume One has a spill-mark on the front cover.Still, a solid and attractive set.. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1912. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the Sixth English Edition [Wade, 99]. Uncommon, particularly is nice condition. Dark blue cloth binding, with titling and spectacular decorations in gilt. Clean text; xv, 324 pages, with a frontis drawing of the youthful poet. Top edge trimmed, others rough-cut. This contains a Preface dated 1901 from the Third Edition, and the 1912 revision of "The Countess Cathleen." Tipped in is an interesting publisher's notice warning booksellers to not discount the price. Mild bumping to the corners; top dusty; spotting to the ndpapers and fore-edge. . Sixth English Edition. London: The Caxton Publishing Co., 1907. One of "The Golden Poets" series with overall editing by Oliphant Smeaton. First published by Jack, Edinburgh, in 1906 [Wade, 235]. This reissue by Caxton is more common. There is no publication date, but is generally assumed to be 1907. Rich brown decorative cloth binding, with Art Deco-style floral stampings in orange; titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 290 pages; top-edge is gilt, others trimmed. Graced by a frontispiece and vignette title by A.S. Hartrick; eight coloured illustrtions by Jessie M. King. A Near Fine copy; with close inspection one can discern a very slight darkening of the spine. Else a Fine copy of a beautiful little book.. Second Edition. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine/No Jacket. Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1903. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition Thus, the First Printing of Mosher's production, which was LIMITED to 950 copies. Gray paper-covered boards with paper labels on spine and front cover. Clean text; 33 pages plus the delimitation. An attractive but rather fragile production, this copy has cracked at the spine, showing the netting, but seems to be holding rather well. Bumped, and a couple of tiny chips. The first separate English edition after the copyright edition of 1903 which was twelve copies only. Gray paper wraps, sewn. Clean text; 16 pages. Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1906. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing of the First Edition Thus. Mosher calls it the "Sixth Edition," but really it was an additional printing of the same book, which was LIMITED to 950 copies. Quercus assumes that Mosher printed more as he received orders. Gray paper-covered boards with paper labels on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 33 pages plus the delimitation. In the front is the Cast List for the original production in 1894. This copy has been repaired in a rather nice way: a new paper spine and paper tips to the corners have been added, and the title has been beautifully hand-calligraphed (these are fragile areas of this book, and are frequently seen damaged), Some sun-darkening to the top and fore-edges.
