Writing on "United States Senate" letterhead two weeks after JFK's assassination, Yarborough graciously sends an admirer a photograph. Usual huge, bold signature in black ink. Candid closeup portrait of a talking Yarborough at a podium, boldly inscribed and signed at lower right: "For Gerald Arnholt / With best wishes / Ralph W. The first NBA player to score 2,000 points in one season was this forward/guard, who played for the Detroit Pistons (1953-59), Syracuse Nationals (1959-60) and Los Angeles Jets (1961-62); in 1996 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Illinois' Civil War governor calls a special session of the legislature in order to enact emergency war preparedness measures. After reviewing the traitorous actions of the "disloyal States" and the Union's "clearly and unmistakably in self-defense" response, Yates beseeches the legislature for sweeping reform, "the enactment of a practicable militia law." The Civil War governor of Illinois (1861-65) also served as representative (1851-55) and senator (1865-71). Bold and handsome "Richd Yates / USS," tan 3½" X 1" slip, n.p., n.y. Fine. Though not dated, this would have been a free-franking signature clipped from a type of envelope commonly used by Congressman and dates to Yates' Senate period. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved portrait, heavy stock 6" X 9", engraved by J.C. Buttre of New York and captioned "Eminent Loyal Governors" in ornate flowing typeface along the lower margin. Head-and-shoulders portrait of 13 Union governors, each within a small oval border; Yates appears near the upper left.

Original single vertical and horizontal mailing folds visible but not weakened; lightly age toned, with homely brownish water spots scattered throughout, clearly visible but not terribly disfiguring; edges slightly trimmed (not affecting his likeness but slightly impeding upon the large "J" at lower left). Near the lithographer's credit at lower left the "Union Label" or seal for the L.I.P. & B.A. appears. A handsome life-size head-and-shoulders three-quarters pose of the up-and-coming ex-judge, with "Judge Richard Yates" along the lower margin in a large typeface. Undated, but likely 1901. The 40-ish Yates -- who with hair parted down the middle and handlebar moustache would fit nicely into any barbershop quartet -- gazes thoughtfully to the viewer's right. In a light area at upper right, Yeager signs boldly in black fineline. Yeager's 1985 autobiography, titled simply "Yeager," proved a bestseller, especially coming as it did on the heels of the popular 1983 film "The Right Stuff" (in which he did a cameo as Fred the bartender and Sam Shepard portrayed Yeager); excerpts from it were serialized in Chicago's most popular newspaper.
