Semi-autobiographical novel about three women sharing a flat in Chicago during the time leading up to the Chicago World's Fair. The story is based around the real life work of Enid Yandell, a sculptor who studied with Auguste Rodin, and who contributed several notable works to the Columbian Exposition. She is "Duke" in the novel, which tells of her work as a sculptor on the Fairgrounds and the life of young women in Chicago as the White City was being built.

The birthplace of actress Winona Ryder, Winona, Minnesota has probably not had an Asian population greater than 3% of its total residents (according to US Census data available.) I could find no information about Frank Yep, or the "Chinese Cook Book Company." Each recipe is accompanied by a cartoonish drawing, usually the same character in different poses. These show racial stereotypes in the way that many of the Southern cookbooks with "Mammy" drawings did. Near fine condition with only real flaw being owner's emboss to front endpaper; DJ has closed tear to rear panel and two chips at head of spine, now protected by mylar sleeve. A nice reading copy of this fun tale of a STEM-oriented kid who wants to learn to sing.

Interestingly, the DJ flap mentions the 1953 Japanese film "Gate of Hell" but other than similar source material, I don't know of any direct relation between the two. A lovely collectible copy.
