Stromness: Printed by Wm Rendall for Orkney Natural History Society, 1903 The introduction states that this Account was first read to the Orkney Natural History Society in February 1902 and was printed and published at their request. It has been bound in blue buckram with gilt titles to spine and front board. The binding is in very good clean condition. There is the bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted collector of Orcadian works, to the front pastedown. Contents with new endpapers, original blanks, title, introduction and text pp 1-18 with 4 full page illustrations. Contents in very good to near fine clean condition.

Dublin: James Williams , 1775 A fair copy of Vol II of the 2nd Dublin Edition, rebound in quarter cloth with marbled boards, with 2 single and 2 folding plates. There is a sad ink note on the verso of the initial blank to the effect that Vol I was lent to the original owner's friend Mr Robert Barber, but was lost when his ship - The Ville de Paris - sank on her voyage home. The binding has a leather title label on the spine and is in very good clean condition with light wear to edges. The endpapers have been replaced. The initial blank has been retained with tissue reinforcement. Contents: title; contents 7pp; text pp 1-539 with 2 single and one folding plate - finis; title to Voyage to North Pole; dedication 2pp; text pp 5-49 with one folding plate - finis. This copy collates with that held by the Hathi Trust, but there are remnants of paper between pp 12-13 of North Pole - this may be a tie but we have seen reference in another copy to a map. London: Jacob Tonson, 1700 A very good copy of what is probably the earliest published account of the Orkney Islands, in contemporary full leather binding, with newer spine, and with folding map and plate. The work was originally written by James Wallace (1642-1688) who was a Minister - initially in Ladykirk and then Kirkwall. The manuscript, complete with his drawings, was prepared for publication after his death by one of his sons - also James - who was a botanist. It was published in 1693 under the title of 'A description of the Isles of Orkney', and included an essay on Thule credited to Sir Robert Sibbald. This account was published by James 7 years later, under his own name (and claiming the title of FRS - although he did not hold it). It is largely the same as the previous work, but it adds a section on plants and shells. It was dedicated to the Earl of Dorset and mentions neither his father, nor Sir Robert Sibbald. London and Edinburgh: J Mawman and David Brown, 1815 A fair copy of this important work in newer quarter leather binding. John Laing was ship's surgeon on The Resolution, which sailed from Whitby via Lerwick in the Shetland Isles to the North Sea whale fisheries at Spitzbergen in 1806/7. The book is based on his notes at the time and general observations of his journey, and includes fascinating descriptions of the wildlife he saw. This copy is classed as 'fair' because the print is quite heavy and, in some sections, has offset to the preceding text page. The text is still readable. The binding is in near fine condition with gilt titles and blind tooled lines to spine, and marbled boards. There is slight fading to the spine and light wear. New endpapers and blanks. Calcutta: Printed by Order of the Trustees of the Indian Museum , 1902 First english edition - translated from the german by Robert Von Lendenfeld. Complete with 23 full page black and white plates. It looks to have been rebound in a good cloth binding fairly recently: the binding is in excellent condition with gilt titles to spine. Internally the endpapers are new. There is a small ink signature to the top of the title page but the contents are otherwise unmarked. There is a little brown spotting to title page and second 'note' page, but the remainder of the text and plates are clean and in very good condition. 113 pages plus plates (each with protective guard). An extremely scarce work.

London: T Cadell Jun. and W Davies, in the Strand, 1802 A very good copy of Martin Sauer's account of the Joseph Billings expedition to Northern Russia. Commodore Billings was commissioned by Catherine the Great to head the expedition, which took nine years, returning in 1794 with extensive data and mapping from the region, and enhanced knowledge of local populations. Martin Sauer was the Secretary and translator and agreed to join the party on the basis that he could write and publish an account of the travels. This he did when he came to England and it forms the first and only English edition. It relies mainly on the official journal and his own notes. This copy is in a new half calf binding with marbled boards. The spine has a title label and decorative gilt ruled bands. New endpapers. London: Printed for J Hartley, A Gibson; and Tho. Hodgson, 1702 A fair copy of the 1st edition in contemporary panelled calf. The binding is complete but very worn with splitting at the joints; a lot of wear and loss to spine ends and corners; and leather surface loss to the boards. There is the armorial bookplate of Strickland Freeman Esq of Fawley Court, Bucks, 1810 to the front pastedown endpaper. Strickland Freeman was a landowner and sportsman, and author of a number of works on horsemanship. Contents with title; dedication 4pp; preface 2pp; introduction 7pp; text pp 1-122; voyage to I-Columb pp 123- 144; title A Short Dissertation by Thomas Brown and text 147-175; errata; advert on final page. The contents are very clean and sound with lightly toned paper. There is occasional scholarly annotation.

LONDON: Printed for Captain Wilson and sold by G Nicol, 1789 A good copy of this famous account, first published a year earlier in 1788. With 17 plates, 12 of which are folding. In a good half leather binding - the spine has a red leather title label and gilt compartments and is newer than the marbled boards. The newer leather is in very good condition; the boards have wear, particularly to edges. All page edges are gilt. There is an ink signature on the front pastedown - ? Mr Dickinson, Thorncroft Workington and then Cornsickle, Whitehaven 1882. With frontispiece portrait of Captain Wilson, title page (with small pencil note), dedication, folding chart of the Pelew Islands, Introduction, contents list and text including 7 plates of objects, 3 additional portraits, 3 views, 1 large folding view and 1 plan. Antverpiae [Antwerp]: Ex officina Christophori Plantini Architypographi Regii, 1580 An extremely scarce original copy in soft cover vellum binding, printed and published by Christopher Plantin and with his printer's device on the title page. This work is a contemporary account of events in the Netherlands during the period of armed rebellion against the rule of Philip II of Spain and its subsequent repression. The activities of Mathias (Holy Roman Emperor), who was invited to be Governor of the Netherlands in 1577, in promoting a Catholic revival have been said to be contributory to the Thirty Years War. The work was edited by Aggaeus Van Albada, an extremely able who was principal speaker for the Netherlands at the peace talks that followed the rebellion. Christopher Plantin, whose major printing house was in Antwerp, suffered personally in the conflict - only saving his business from destruction by paying ransoms to the Spanish soldiers. London, New York, & Bombay: Longmans, Green, & Co, 1897 A good to very good copy of an unusual tale of supremely confident infants, a sensitive dragon and wicked people. Rosamund Praeger is best known as a sculptor, but was also an artist, illustrator, poet and writer. She wrote and illustrated a number of books for children which tend to be difficult to find now. This copy is in the original paper covered boards with cloth spine, with titles and illustration to front board, and illustration to back board. There is some paper loss at the edges and corners of the boards with some professional repair. The surfaces are a bit scuffed but quite clean. There is slight bubbling to an area of the paper on the front board. The original brown endpapers are present with the blind stamp of W H Smith and Son, 1900, to the top of the fep. The contents are unpaginated. They are complete and clean with slight roughness to page edges and light toning to paper. There is the occasional small spot or mark. Book size 28.5… Read More

Herbert Jenkins Limited A very good copy of the 8th printing in wrap. Undated but circa 1934 from the titles listed at the back of the book. The wrap is circa 1930 (Summer Lightning and Very Good, Jeeves listed at 7/6 on the back flap). The orange cloth binding has black titles and scene on the front board, and black titles to the spine. The spine is slightly faded with slight pulling at the ends. The boards are very bright with small bumps at the top corners. Internally the endpapers and half title are very browned and spotty. The text is very clean. There is some spotting to the foredge some of which is visible internally. The wrap is complete and has 2/6 on the spine. The spine is darkened and there is some loss at the top and bottom of the spine folds. The panels are slightly grubby with edge nibbling and small loss at the flap folds. There is some archive tape repair. On the verso, the wrap has a browned spine and general spotting.

London: A&C Black, 1921 A superb copy of this wonderful illustrated children's book. The first edition was published in 1920 in Boston - this is the first english edition. There are 8 coloured plates, of which 1 is pasted down onto the front board. The spine is faded, and the book is a bit bent. Neat ownership inscription on front fixed endpaper. Contents very bright and clean. Small light book - please enquire if you would like us to assess postage at cost.

London: Macmillan and Co., Ltd, 1907 A good to very good copy of the 2nd edition of 'The Little Folks' Edition' of Alice, with 32 coloured illustrations by John Tenniel. In the original red decorative cloth binding with titles and white rabbit to front board, and titles to spine. The binding is sound and clean, with some mottling to the boards (mostly the back board), and light wear to edges (including spine joints), and corners. Internally there is an inscription dated 1907 to the fep, which also has a little pencil marking. The contents are very clean and in very good condition with the occasional light spot or mark. Scarce.

London: J Coker and Co., Ltd A good copy in the original decorative card binding with pasted colour picture of Alice with the White Rabbit. Undated but probably around 1907-15. With colour frontispiece and 7 further colour plates by Bessie Pease, and decorative borders by G P Micklewright. The binding has a red cloth spine, which is faded and worn, particularly at the top and bottom. There is edge and corner-wear to the boards. There is some slight indentation to the pasted picture visible in some lights. The contents are complete and very clean and bright.

Paris: Le Fuel, 1809 A very good copy in full red morocco binding with card slip case in matching binding. With 6 black and white plates and additional vignette illustrations. The case is of a card case design in red morocco leather with a gilt border of leaves and flowers. The front has gilt titles and gilt compartments and the rear has a gilt chain design. It is clean and complete with some wear to corners and darkening in some places. The book has a matching binding which is in near fine condition, with just slight darkening where it fits into the case. All page edges gilt. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1897 A very good copy of the complete work - being Vol VII, pts 2 and 8 of the Transactions of the Linnean Society of London, 2nd Ser. Zoology. In the original Linnean Society wraps, pt 2 dated 1897 and pt 8 dated 1899. With 15 black and white plates. Wraps in good condition - a little loss from spines and grubbiness to edges. Contents in very good clean condition with many text pages unopened.

Edinburgh: Ballantyne, Hanson & Co, 1885 A very good 1st edition copy, scarce in its original form. Col David Balfour of Balfour dedicated his collection of old melodies to Orkney, as a 'loving son'. He first heard most of them as a small child on Shapinsay and collected others that he thought were original over the intervening years. He was determined to preserve their uniqueness in the days before sound recording was widely available. This copy is in a near fine wrapper, which could be original. The cloth binding with gilt titles to front board and spine, has some fading and light staining to the top of the front board. There is slight wear to the front spine joint, and some lighter patches on the back board. Aeg. Newcastle upon Tyne: Printed for the Author, 1788 A very good copy of the scarce 1st edition. Written as a protest - the author's preface states 'the design of publishing....is rather to make more clearly known the hardships and unconstitutional government of this Burgh'. Eunson has an interesting history: some accounts state that he was a smuggler who turned 'gamekeeper' being made an Officer of Excise by an influential patron. His zeal made him enemies who then had him arrested and locked up. The book is said to be his revenge and he does not hold back - accusing the nobility of rigging elections in favour of their cronies; and that the legal profession were involved in smuggling. This copy is in a half leather binding with gilt lining and title label to spine and marbled boards. The spine and corners are new with the original marbled paper. It is therefore sound and tight. Londini [London]: Guilielmi Stansbij,Impensis Simonis Watersoni, 1615 2 volumes bound in one, in contemporary full leather binding, 1615 and 1627 respectively. 1st edition of Annales and 1st London edition of Tomus Alter. The binding retains the original boards and spine which has been rebacked, retaining the title label. It is slightly worn at the top of the spine joint with the front board and there is wear to corners with some loss of leather. Internally there is a label of Wimbledon College Community Library pasted to the rear of the front board and a small circular stamp of 'The Sacred Heart, Wimbledon' at the side of the Annales title page together with a very faint signature at the top.
