Description:
56-[5 ad] pages with tables and diagrams. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First published in 1934.
The match began September 6, 1929 under the following conditions: Alekhine would get $6,000 dollars win or lose, with any surplus going to Bogoljubov. A winner would be declared if he scored 15½ points with 6 wins from a maximum of 30 games. Unlike the Capablanca-Alekhine 1927 match, which had been played in private, the Alekhine-Bogoljubov match would be played in public. The organizers insisted on this, in order to raise money from ticket sales. Only those cities that contributed to the purse would be allowed to host the match: Wiesbaden (games 1-8; 24-25), Heidelberg (games 9-11), Berlin (games 12-17), The Hague (games 18-19; 23), Rotterdam (game 20), and Amsterdam (games 21-22). Emanuel Lasker served as arbiter in the Berlin games.
Alekhine won the 1st game, but Bogoljubov kept pace, evening the score 1-1 after a win in Game 4. The world champion won the… Read More

First American edition. The AVRO Chess Tournament of 1938, sponsored by the Dutch broadcasting company, Algemeene Vereeniging Radio Omroep, was a valiant effort to provide a challenger to Alexander Alekhine. The official opening of the A.V.R.O tournament took place on Saturday evening, November 5th at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam. No games were played until the next day, with the evening devoted to opening ceremonies, speeches and drawing lots for the schedule of rounds. The hall was decorated with the national flags of the participating masters' countries. All players were present except for Capablanca, who was represented by tournament director Salo Landau. Description:
vi+218 pages with tables, charts, maps and appendices. Octavo (8 3/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Museum of anthropology, University of Michigan, Number 23. Reprint. Anthropologists and botanists talk about the value of prehistoric plant remains and plants of living aborigines in the study of evolution of human cultures and plants, but they publish very little. Richard Yarnell provides a much needed report of studies he and others have made, paying particular attention to Michigan, and summarizes the literature and some unpublished records of Volney Jones and Edward Voss. He goes far beyond the Upper Great Lakes area and, especially for cultivated plants, covers materials from New York to Kentucky and to Nebraska, Wisconsin and Ontario. This work is essential for anyone studying plant use by Indians of this region. Condition: Head end pages damp stained, corners bumped, spine sunned else a very good copy.

Inscribed by Becky London. (Sisson and Martens page 70) First edition variant binding. The Abysmal Brute is a novel by American writer Jack London, first published in book form in 1913. It is a short novel, and could be regarded as a novelette. It first appeared in September 1911 in Popular Magazine. In the story, a successful boxer, who was brought up in a log cabin and knows little of the real world, begins to realize the corrupt practices in the game of boxing. In 1910, when the story was written, London had become a famous writer but he was worried that he had exhausted his ideas. The Abysmal Brute was based on one of several plot outlines he bought from Sinclair Lewis, an admirer of London who was at the beginning of his career. Other stories by Jack London about boxing are his novel The Game, published in… Read More
