Description:
One page, 8vo, December, 1933. The Sheiling, Carnforth, Lancs. Gordon Bottomly is returning a book, Bie's big "Opera-book." "Dear Mr. Reeves, I am sure that it is a good value for any one who reads German: but I don't, alas, and my hope was that I should find in it an adequate illustrated record of the enormous improvements in the mounting of operas made in Munich and Vienna in the last forty years. There is an absolute fairy-tale of a book on Opera to be made on those lines, and I had great hopes that Bie had done it in this book...." Other details regarding music he received and paying too much for postage. Very good.

Bournemonth, 12 December, 1892. Two page letter to fellow author, Edmund J. Baillie ("John Ruskin: Aspects of His Thought and Teaching, 1882) thanking him for sending his paper on the character of conifers and discussing the colors of trees. "I am much struck by your remarks on the fine tints and colors of this tribe, which I have often noticed myself with admiration. I think that on the alps where the ferns affect one most, the cloud and mist, intervening between, give a new cadence to their natural color.." etc. A very nice letter by the renowned poet and botanist, de Tabley. Description:
Four pages, written by the British composer, author, singer and friend/associate to Pre-Raphaelites, after his 1873 book of poetry, "The Gallery of Pigeons," which includes a poem with the reputation of having been the 'worst poem ('A Tragedy,' in the English Language.' Still, Ford Madox Brown called the collection "by far the most exquisite... by any of the lesser Pre-Raphaelite poets." Marzial writes, "British Museum, 14: April, 1880, Dear Sir, I should have had the greatest pleasure in doing only music with such a musician as yourself, but I am very sorry to say that I am engaged for all the 1st week in May for concerts both afternoon & evening..." etc. "I shall be 'touring' for some local charity down by Haywards Heath which I fear would be too far for a 'combination'..." etc. A few minor tears, soiling and brown spots.

London: R. Ackermann, 1916. First separate edition. First separate edition. Folio. Bound in 19th century three-quarters vellum, cloth sides. 14 x 11 inches (35 x 28 cm); [1] ff., 34 pp., Five superb hand-colored aquatint engravings. As noted in Abbey Scenery 438, Ackermann's The History of the Colleges of Winchester, Eton, and Westminster..., which included Rugby, was available for sale by the school. The headmaster of Rugby at this time was the Reverend John Wooll, notorious for his floggings; after his resignation in 1828, he was succeeded by the redoubtable Thomas Arnold, whose reforms long influenced English education. Slight loss of cloth to front board (about 2 x .5 inches), some offsetting from plates, occasional minor foxing. Overall very good copy of a nice Ackermann printing.

Description:
London: Printed for Andrew Crook, 1651. 8vo, 8 1/2 x 6 inches. 19th Century quarter calf (rebacked), earlier marbled paper covered boards. The scarce complete first edition of Ogilby's translation of 1651 with 81 copperplate illustrations of fables. Frontis cut down and mounted on old paper, other paper repairs professionally restored. Title page with "Eugenai Wright Her Book" in what appears to be a very early inscription. Lacks large corner of Plate 55, and a narrow strip at foot of Plate 38. One plate is partly colored, and a couple of drawings to versos of plates. Expert paper repair throughout with some cuts lost, but still a fabulous survival. A few text pages with minor ink spots but nothing defacing. The first Ogilby edition herewith has the D'Avenant poem dated 165, and is thus more difficult to come by than later editions. With all, still a very presentable and certainly scarce mid-17th Century Aesop title, first edition thus.

Description:
Amsterdam: D'Estienne Roger, 1701. 12mo. 19th Century marbled boards (rubbed), later calf spine (sl. wear to extr.), marbled endpapers contemporary with boards. 473pp. followed by six pages of Table [of Contents], ending with half-page advertisement. Exceedingly scarce Aesop title, with exquisite full-page copper-engraved frontispiece, title printed in red and black with device, and 147 half-page copper-engraved text illustrations throughout, as per P. van der Borcht. 473 S. This is the scarce Aesop Fables collection by the French scholar, Jean Baudoin; the small-format etchings carry on a much-celebrated woodcut history for the Fables ... As early as 1593, these woodcut templates had been processed into a cycle of etchings, and the work of Pieter van der Borcht, which is used again here in Baudoin's presentation of the Fables. - Rare edition, contains 117 fables. A remarkably preserved copy, fine internally, amazingly bright with no significant wear. "The life of Aesop" (30 Texcupfer, p. 11-93).
