Description:
London: John Boydell, 1781. Mezzotint by Richard Earlom, proof before title. A very rare proof mezzotint after the work of Jan van Huysum: the "last of the great Dutch masters'' (Mitchell), the "Phoenix of Flower Painters." (Weyerman) Proof, before title, the first before the motto was added to the Earl of Orford's coat-of-arms. "It is the fate of some painters to be celebrated in their lifetime only and to be disregarded by later generations...Other painters pass their lives in obscurity only to be acclaimed by a succeeding century. A few, a very few, achieve a fame which is universal in their own day, never falters, and remains unchanged today. Jan van Huysum is among them. To Weyerman...Van Huysum was the 'phoenix of Flower Painters.' To Vertue, writing of six paintings he saw in an English collection in the 1740s, they were 'the most inimitable pictures that were ever seen.' In Van Huysum's lifetime the Kings of Poland and Prussia, the Elector of Saxony, Prince William of Hesse, the Dukes of… Read More

Description:
1800. Engraving, 5 x 4 inches. Light soiling. A few contemporary ink notations on verso. Engraved portrait of Governor Anne Joseph Hippolyte de Maurès, Comte de Malartic, governor of the island of Mauritius. The portrait is a line-drawing, done in profile and framed in an oval. Flags flank either side of the oval frame and it is captioned beneath. There is some light wear to the tiny imprint information, causing it to be slightly obscured, but it is possible that the illustrator's name is "Girouai" and the engraver may be "Noiret." The engraving is a bit crude and printed on laid paper. It is likely that it was done shortly after Malartic's death in 1800. A most unusual and exotic image, a tribute to the rich culture of printing that flourished on the remote island in the south Indian Ocean.

Description:
[London: Published by J.F.W. Des Barres in 'The Atlantic Neptune', 1777. Hand-colored etching on Bates paper. No imprint. Sheet size: 32 1/4 x 23 3/4 inches with center fold, as with all early issues. Expert restoration to center fold and marginal tears. A set of six navigational views of Halifax Harbour and nearby coastal area, from one of the most important North American marine atlases. This group includes four profile views intended as aids to navigation. The profiles were intended for use by captains of vessels to identify exactly where they were in relation to distant shorelines; added to these is a charming roundel giving a picturesque view of a waterfall on the Hinchinbroke River and finally a tranquil view in Halifax harbour which is enlivened by the small scene in the lower right of the image where, amid clouds of steam, men work frantically to re-tar the hull of a man-of-war. This finely coloured example of the print corresponds to Stevens 51, first state without stamped plate number.… Read More

Description:
London: Thomas McLean, 1825. Aquatint and engraving, coloured by hand. Sheet sizes: 9 3/8 x 11 5/8 inches and 9 1/2 x 11 7/8 inches. A handsome and humourous pair of angling prints. The first image shows a fisherman with a slack line just after losing a fish and stepping into a cow pad, with the Virgil caption roughly translated as "Thus all things change for the worse." The Horace quotation is a play on words, substituting "Perchicos" [perch] for "Persicos" [i.e. Persian], and roughly translated as "The finest perch is not for me." The second image shows an angler who has pulled a fish from the water but whose line (and fish) are caught in a tree. The famous fishing-related Horace quotation follows, "The fish was entangled in the elm tree." The Virgil quotation refers to the climbing into the river to free his line and can be read as "courage to tempt the raging stream.

Description:
Nuremburg: J. B. Homann, 1730. Hand-coloured engraving. Good condition, margins re-backed to restore several minor losses and tears. A dramatic star chart by Doppelmayr illustrating the autumnal and early winter zodiacal signs: part of Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and part of Capricorn. Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750) was a Nuremberg astronomer and mapmaker, who made globes, star charts, moon charts and completed Homann's Atlas Coelestis in 1742. This is part V of a group of six showing the entire panorama of the night sky as known and represented in the early 18th century. The stars are differentiated according to magnitude, and there is an extensive star index on each side of the chart. Johann Batiste Homann (1663-1724) began his professional life as an engraver for others, founding his own cartographical firm in 1702. He brought back to life German mapmaking, which virtually ceased in the early 16th century, using Dutch cartography as his guide and starting point.

Description:
London: John Baskett [and others], printers, 1818. 12 works, folio. (12 1/2 x 8 inches, and smaller). Disbound or stitched A fascinating series spanning the whole of the period when whaling was carried out on a successful commercial basis in the waters off Greenland. After an abortive start by the South Sea Company between 1724 and 1732, the British whaling fleet operated off Greenland and the Davis Strait throughout the remainder of the 18th century, with increasing success due to a large degree to the succession of bounties granted to ship owners by the British Government. The present selection of acts of parliament includes a number concerning the bounty: the first, dated 16th January 1732 makes law "that a Bounty [will] be paid on the Return of every Ship [of 200 tons and over] imployed by His Majesty's Subjects in the Whale Fishery". For the bounty to be paid, certain stringent criteria had to be met; these increased as the century progressed. By the time of the last Act in the present group… Read More

Description:
London: F. Jukes, 1793. Aquatint engravings, coloured by hand, by Francis Jukes. A lovely set of large early Romantic views of the border region The plates are titled: 1. 'View of Jedburgh Abbey'; 2. 'View of the Town and Bridge of Berwick'; 3. 'View of Berwick upon Tweed'; 4. 'View of Dryborough Abbey and the Elden-Hills'. Created for an English audience, they reflect a new admiration for the beauties of Scotland and for pre-industrialized regions generally. Francis Jukes advanced the art of printed landscape considerably with his beautifully colored views of ruined abbeys, desolate seashores and expansive valley vistas, enunciating the longing to "return to Nature" that found expression in the work of Wordsworth and others at just this time. Charles Catton, the elder, was born in Norwich 'one of a family of thirty-five children, was apprenticed to a London coach-painter, and found time also for some study in the St. Martin's Lane academy. He is chiefly known as a landscape and animal painter, but… Read More

Description:
London: Josephus Sympson, 1741. Large folio. (16 1/2 x 20 5/16 inches). Without text (as issued). 4 copper-engraved plates by Josephus Sympson after Marmaduke Cradock, window-mounted within a modern cloth box, leather lettering-piece. A fine lively series featuring at least 16 different species of birds. Cradock was born at Somerton, near Ilchester, in Somerset in about 1660. He was apprenticed to a house painter in London, but at the end of the apprenticeship turned to painting animals, birds and still life. His success with private patrons was limited and, in the main, he produced pictures for dealers. The DNB describes his work for Josephus Sympson as being `very spirited' and notes that it was not until after his death that the 'merits of his pictures were recognised, and they rose in value'. Walpole praised some of his work, and examples are included in Lord Derby's famous collection at Knowsley and the Yale Centre for British Art. The subjects of the plates are as follows: 1. A kestrel (?)… Read More

Description:
Weimar: im Verlage des geographischen Instituts, 1828. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in excellent condition. The highly important first printed map to focus on Arkansas. This map depicts the Arkansas Territory, formed in 1819, as one of the jurisdictions carved out of the massive Louisiana Purchase. It includes all of the lands making up the modern state of Arkansas, as well as the Indian Lands that now form the main portion of Oklahoma. The Indian Lands were not divided from Arkansas Territory until 1828, the same year that this map was printed. The present map is remarkable in that it is the first ever printed map to focus on Arkansas itself. The portrayal of the territory is far more advanced and of a larger scale than that depicted on the map that appeared in Carey & Lea's American Atlas (Philadelphia, 1822) that relegated the depiction of Arkansas to a small lower portion of the map. The present map is also an important document of the early development of Arkansas, showing… Read More

Description:
London: Smith & Elder, 1822. Hand-coloured aquatint, by John Clark. An important topographical view of Aberdeen, county town of Aberdeenshire in north east Scotland This view should perhaps be seen as an immediate forerunner of John Clark's own Views in Scotland published in London between 1824 and 1825 with a total of 35 plates. The view is taken from the south bank of the Dee looking across the river to what a contemporary gazetteer calls 'New Aberdeen', the same work notes that the town was situated 'on rising ground, on the north bank of the Dee, near the mouth of the river, and about 1 1/2 miles to the south of the river Dona royal burgh and parish in the county of the same name.' (Fullarton [publishers] A Gazetteer of the World 1856, I, p.12). The population in 1821 was 26,484 and had risen to 35,260 by 1841. The gazetteer notes that New Aberdeen 'is a large and handsome city with spacious streets. Union-street is upwards of a mile in length, and of great beauty. Broad-street... is celebrated… Read More

This plate is an outstanding example of the former group, here drawn by James Black and lithographed by Robert Black. Cf. Nissen BBI 1588; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p.127; cf. Stafleu & Cowan 8685.
