All edges gilt. A fine copy with some wear to corners and joins of binding; a few scattered underscorings and marginalia in an early hand. First appearance of Pierre Pithou's edition of Juvenal and Persius, based on the discovery of a 9th-century manuscript in the Benedictine abbey of Lorsch. Printed paper title label on upper board and printed date label on spine. Spine a bit slanted. Text unmarked. Published as bulletin #108 by the New York State Museum. Consists of an exhaustive county-by-county list of every location in New York, political or geographical, whose name derives from American Indian languages.

Bound in original publisher's marbled stiff wraps, untrimmed, with manuscript title labels. These two volumes contain the treaties of the South and West of Europe (Spain, Portugal, France, Great Britain, Holland, Germany, Italian States--the other volumes cover the North and East) from the Peace of Westphalia (1648) to the Treaty of Fontainebleau (1785). The texts of the various treaties are introduced by analyses of the causes of the particular wars, including the American War of Independence.

Extra illustrated with photograph tipped in on front blank, and ink tracing on onion skin laid in showing "detail from arch leading to inner hall of tomb of Qen Amen," signed in March 1903 with the initials T.M. Bound in original printed boards with cloth spine. Boards and spine somewhat worn and text block somewhat shaken in binding.

In 1/4 leather over mottled paper-covered boards, with leather title labels between raised bands, titled in gilt with gilt ornaments. Marbled endleaves with matching marbled edges. Corners and extremities worn. Some light scattered foxing. Not only a handbook of rules and strategies for a host of games (many of them extinct), but also a discourse on probability and an exploration of the mathematics of chance.

Misprints on pages 9, 13, 57, and 155 all corrected from initial misprints, indicating second-state issue of the first edition. A cheaply manufactured book, few copies survive that do not show wear and tear. In this case, the binding is worn along all edges, and the text block is a bit shaken (not tight), the frontispiece is partially detached, yet all hinges and joints are intact (unusual for this title), and the spine ends are only minimally worn and frayed. Text is clean, if not exactly bright. A good copy of the first edition of one of the three defining books of nineteenth-century America. BAL 3415.

Misprints on pages 9, 13, 57, and 155 uncorrected, indicating first-state issue. A cheaply manufactured book, few copies survive that do not show wear and tear. In this case, we have taken measures to rehabilitate the spine and strengthen the hinges (splitting in most copies), and apply restorative cloth to the spine ends (stripped and fraying in most copies), extending the life of the book. Edges, lower corners rubbed, exposing boards. Pages toned and moderately stained. Text block a bit tired. Still, a prize copy of the first edition of one of the three defining books of nineteenth-century America. BAL 3415.

Trajecti ad Rhenum [i.e., Utrecht]: Johannes Wagens, 1725. Fifth edition. Acceptable. 16 cm; [28], 525, [15] pages. Portrait frontispiece, engraved title page. Full vellum. Upper hinge detaching. Pages toned, but not blemished. Menage was less a legal scholar than he was a literary figure. Consequently this book, posed as discourses on civil law, is actually a wide-ranging excursion through a vast variety of topics literary, historical, legal, and even domestic.

Albany: C. Van Benthuysen, 1854. Original edition. Good+. 30 cm; 272 pages, and 50 lithograph plates, 47 of them hand-colored illustrations of insects. In original cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Vignette of Ceres in gilt on upper board. Fascia of wheat on spine. Joints fraying and tender. Spine ends a bit frayed. Foxed variably throughout. Better than good. Remarkable for the 47 hand-colored plates of insects by the author's son, Ebenezer Emmons Jr.

Slight discoloration at upper right corner of upper wrap, else about fine. Paste-paper reference: Remondini: Un editore del Settecento, , p. 130, #60. A little book of gratulatory sonnets, madrigals, and anancreontics written for the occasion of the wedding of Count Cristoforo di Rovero and Countess Zenobia d'Onigo, at the count's villa at San Zenone, near Bassano. The villa was the site of something like a salon, as di Rovero regularly invited collections of notable guests for extended stays in the country. Giuseppe Remondini, the head of the great printing, print-making, paper-decorating, and dyeing concern based in Bassano, was a close friend and frequent guest. Many plates with English translation of caption supplied in ink (in Hoe's hand?). Pervasive damp stain at juncture of gutter and top edge. Bound in half levant morocco over marbled boards, by David. Bookplate of Robert Hoe, later bookplate (by E.D. French) of Colonel C.L.F. Robinson. Reference: Hoe sale III, 1194 (this copy). The Hoe-Robinson copy of a collection of cartoons that affectionately satirize Parisian sexual-social customs. Forain was a friend and protégé of Degas, and a follower of Daumier.
