Description:
London: Ingram, Cooke, & Co.,, 1853. First edition in English of one of the masterpieces of Russian literature First edition in English of one of the masterpieces of Russian literature, Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time, originally published at Saint Petersburg in 1840, and the first of any of Lermontov's works in English. This edition was issued in the somewhat obscure, "elegant and rather miscellaneous" (Sadleir) Illustrated Family Novelist series; it is well represented institutionally but in commerce is certainly uncommon. The timing of the edition is interesting, coinciding as it does with the Crimean War. "Events surrounding the outbreak of the Crimean War gave rise to renewed anti-Russian sentiment, but also renewed curiosity: Russia became for the English 'deeply and painfully interesting'... Instead of silencing translators, the new russophobic wave made propagandists of them". In the introduction to this translation, the writer states "'I think I have said sufficient to prove that Russia is in… Read More

Description:
[London: , 1984]. The author's own copy of his article on de Moivre's De Mensura Sortis, an important early contribution to probability theory, the original offprint specially bound together with a xerox of the original 1712 work, and with Hald's ownership signature to the front free endpaper. De Mensura Sortis, published in Latin in Philosophical Transactions, gave an overview of main concepts such as probability, conditional probability, expectation, dependent and independent events, the multiplication rule, and the binomial distribution. The treatise was dedicated to Sir Isaac Newton, whose priority in the dispute between Newton and Leibniz over the development of infinitesimal calculus de Moivre had defended. Nearly all the work was later incorporated into de Moivre's book The Doctrine of Chances (1718, 1738, 1756), which was the most important textbook on probability theory until the publication of Laplace's Théorie Analytqiue des Probabilités (1812). Description:
From the Beken archive, printed digitally in Sepia-brown. Frank Beken was born in Canterbury, England in 1880. His father Alfred was a chemist and photographer. In 1888 the family moved to the Isle of Wight. The company "Beken & Son Ltd." was born and Frank was soon seen afloat in a dinghy, photographing the fine vessels that sailed the local waters. He quickly designed his own camera, which was more suited to take photographs at sea: it was made to withstand sea-water and was held in both hands, the shutter being fired by biting a rubber ball gripped tightly between the teeth. The beauty and splendour of sail has been captured by the lenses of the Beken family since those early days. Digitally printed. Sepia-brown toned. Fine condition. Presented in a wooden silver frame. Size: 50 x 40 cm. (19½ x 15½ inches)

Description:
A Survey of the Cities of London & Westminster. John Strype., 1755.. John Stow's, A Survey of London, was first published in 1598, with a second edition following in 1603. Stow's most famous work, it is an evocative 'perambulation' of the streets of the Tudor capital, which forms the main framework of the book. The huge growth of the metropolis, the devastation wrought by the Great Fire of 1666 and the subsequent rebuilding of the City made an updating of the Survey highly desirable. It was to answer this need that John Strype (1643-1737), the ecclesiastical historian and biographer, published a new, hugely expanded version of Stow's Survey of London in 1720. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Very good condition. Size: 38 x 24.5 cm. (15 x 9½ inches)

Description:
Braun and Hogenberg, Civitates Orbis Terrarum II 3., 1575. Alhama is a pretty, ancient spa town near Granada. This dramatic engraving, as seen from a nearby hilltop, shows the town perched above the Rio Alham in rolling countryside, while in the foreground, travellers wend their way on the hilly road from Granada. At the bottom of the hill is a bathhouse with steaming cones - 'los bainnos'. In the background, clouds swirl around the mountain tops. The engraving was published in Braun & Hogenberg's Civitates, an encyclopaedic atlas of town plans, that gives a fascinating insight into sixteenth-century Europe. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Very ample margins, crease towards lower edge, rust spot on upper margin, neither of these minor blemishes affect this superb engraving. Fine condition. Size: 45 x 34 cm. (17½ x 13½ inches)
