Wooden box in fabric covered folding case, containing title page, text page, contents page, three tipped-in colour plates, 48 black and white plates, 18 1/2" x 26" x 2 1/2" [47 x 66 x 6 cm]. Images of folding fans from the Shitennoji temple in Osaka, Japan. "The importance of this group of paintings on fan-shaped papers, with the texts of the Buddhist sutra Hokke-Kyo written over the pictures, as a rare example of Yamato-e of the Heian period has been fully recognized." Kenji Toda, "The Shitennoji Albums of Painted Fans." Staining to label on exterior of case. Some light wear to endpapers on interior of folding case, some spotting to title page and to backing papers of tipped-in colour plates, very scattered light spotting to some black and white plates.
