ORTELIUS, Abraham. Turcici Imperii Descriptio. Double-page engraved map, 18x22", wide margins, Latin text on verso; hand-colored with oxidation of verdigris pigment. Map of Arabia and Turkey and Greece Circa 1609. With many details, notably, this map labels the Gulf as "Mare Elcatif" in the northern sector and "Sinus Persicus" to the south. While maps frequently designate the Gulf as "Sinus Persicus" during the period, "Mare Elcatif" is more rare and draws its name from the Elcatif desert region lying just inland and south of Qatar. Four ships sail the seas throughout the map and a beautiful illustration of two cherubs and two sirens is engraved in the bottom left corner with the words "Turcici Imperii Descriptio. "And so it happened that in the daylight hours of that Wednesday morning, Alvin Dewey, breakfasting in the coffee shop of a Topeka hotel, read, on the first page of the Kansas City Star, a headline he had long awaited: Die on Rope for Bloody Crime. The story, written by an Associated Press reporter, began: 'Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith, partners in crime, died on the gallows at the state prison early today for one of the bloodiest murders in Kansas criminal annals. Hickock, 33 years old, died first, at 12:41 A.M.; Smith, 36, died at 1:19...'".

This school was a historically black college that went on to become Alabama State University. Includes tables and graphs. A fine manual that documents African-American students' progress in higher education at an historic HBCU.

Hilda Martindale. Autograph Letter Signed. Dated April 24, 1939. 1 page. 7 x 4.5 in. Black ink on light blue paper. In her hand, Martindale writes in thanks of a friend's encouragement and sends a copy of her recent work. In full: "Here is my book. You were so encouraging about it that I hope you will accept this copy. The review have been good but the sales bad! Perhaps you would tell people about it?" Martindale was an important advocate for women's employment rights in her day; she made history as one of the first woman factory inspectors in Victorian England, and rose to become the Deputy Chief of her department. In 1938, she published a book on the history of women civil servants (likely the book she references in the letter), and upon her death, her estate established a foundation dedicated to assisting British women working in male-dominated fields. Very good.

In article titled The Yippies Are Going To Chicago" Jerry Rubin and Abby Hoffman pen separate retrospectives on the Yippie movement, its confrontations with police, and issue a call to arms to supporters to join them at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which had just occurred in late August 1968. In the article, the political pranksters lampoon McCarthyism, American militarism, and middle class conformity, but Hoffman concludes his piece imploring the reader to "use Chicago as a means of pulling your local community together. It can serve to open up a dialogue between political radicals and those who might be considered hippies...Each can help the other, and Chicago... might well offer the medium to put forth that message." Abd el-Kader was an Algerian religious and military leader who led a struggle against the French colonial invasion in the mid-19th century and founded the Algerian state. He was An Islamic scholar and Sufi who unexpectedly found himself leading a military campaign, he built up a collection of Algerian tribesmen that for many years successfully held out against one of the most advanced armies in Europe. Anti-Slavery Tracts No. 4, circa 1855. in original wrappers, 8 pages. 4.75" x 7.5" inches. Higginson was a Unitarian minister and dedicated abolitionist. The text in this tract was originally delivered as a sermon in Worcester, Massachusetts in June, 1854. Supported by repots from Southern ministers, Higginson argues in this Antislavery pamphlet, that despite slaveowners' claims of benevolence and the alleged civilizing, moral influence of slavery upon the enslaved, slaves in the US in fact receive no sound religious instruction from their masters and exist in a state of "moral degradation" and are "the heathen of this Christian country." Spot of foxing on front cover, light handling wear but very good condition overall.

Front Page Headline reads "The Bill Abolishing Slavery in the District of Columbia Passed the House." Newspaper "The Detroit Free Press", April 12, 1862. 19" x 26", 2 pages. Has a blow by blow account of the debate among the members of the House and the various amendments associated with the bill. It concludes "The bill was passed, 93 agains 39." Also includes local, national and international news, as well as "News From the South." Some small tears at the left hand margin, not affecting text. A diagonal crease runs across the top half of the paper, and a small piece of yellow tape has adhered to the top margin. Overall in very good condition.

LIVERMORE, Mary. American abolitionist, and advocate of Women's Rights. Archive of 3 signed items. Two autograph letters signed, and one autograph quotation signed. She campaigned for the Lincoln- Hamlin ticket in 1860, and when the American Civil War broke out, she became connected with the United States Sanitary Commission in Chicago, performing a vast amount of labor of all kinds-organizing auxiliary societies, visiting hospitals and military posts, contributing to the press, answering correspondence, and more. She helped organize the Chicago Fair of 1863, and when the war was over, she instituted a pro-women's suffrage paper called the Agitator, which was afterwards merged in the Woman's Journal. She was editor for two years and a frequent contributor thereafter. She also devoted herself to the Promotion of Women's Suffrage and the Temperance Movement, starting her own Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) Chapter in her hometown of Melrose, Massachusetts. [Slavery and Abolition]. Anti-Slavery Bugle. Volume 4, No. 5. Salem, Ohio. September 22, 1848. 4 pages. 21" x 16." Abolitionist newspaper distributed in Salem, a station on the Underground Railroad. Featured in this particular issue are articles pertaining to the upcoming presidential election. Many of the writings are discuss the candidates' stances on slavery, especially that of Zachary Taylor. Another article covers an ongoing case, Commonwealth of KY vs. Turner Roberts, in which a free man of color was arrested for migrating to a slave state. Another discusses a recent pro-slavery mob in Harwich, Massachussetts. The newspaper's official slogan, "No Union with Slaveholders," is featured prominently on the front page. The newspaper advocates that "all friends of the Anti-Slavery Society will do what they can to aid in the support of this paper." Some discoloration and creasing; some separation at folds. Otherwise in very good condition.

The original 1865 image was long attributed Mathew Brady and a handwritten note in pencil on verso mentions that attribution, but the image was actually taken by Lewis Emory Walker, a government photographer, about February 1865 and published for him by the E. & H. T. Anthony Co. This rare stereograph (O-104) was Published by Keystone. It is said, that the short haircut was suggested by Lincoln's barber to facilitate the taking of his life mask by Clark Mills. Lincoln's eyes are deep and sorrowful; The civil war had taken its toll on him. One pen notation: "No 92" below the image, Keystone bio of Lincoln on verso, with their copyright.

Newsletter regarding the anti-lynching bill before Congress reads in part, "Despite political promises of 1946 elections, neither the Republican leadership nor the administration have found it 'politically expedient' to do anything whatever to stop the growing lynch terror against the Negro people in our country." The first federal anti-lynching bill was introduced in 1918 in the House of Representatives before southern Democrats blocked its Senate passage. Some version of the bill was reintroduced throughout the rest of the twentieth century and continuously blocked. It would not be until 2020 that the Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act was passed and signed into law in 2022, making lynching a federal crime at long last.
