Surrealist photocollages of nudes in American landscapes. The accompanying text is equally surreal, and we presume that the contributors - such as Amy Abletung (D.Symb.) of the Center for Creative Symbology, Mount Grundy, Iowa - are fictitious.

A large blue-toned carbon print (358 × 430 mm, flush-cut on the original thick card mount), recently matted (visible image size 351 × 423 mm) using archival materials, ready for framing (or long-term storage in its custom-made Mylar sleeve). Light brown discolouration about the top edge (a tidemark is visible on the original mount on the reverse); two tiny surface blemishes; overall, in excellent condition. This photograph is reproduced in 'The Home of the Blizzard' (Volume 1, page 102), with the caption 'Adelie Land. Weddell seals asleep on pancake ice'. Several pages earlier, Mawson writes: 'Seals and penguins on magic gondolas were the silent denizens of this dreamy Venice. In the soft glamour of the midsummer midnight sun, we were possessed by a rapturous wonder the rare thrill of unreality' (page 53). Very Good. A colour-pictorial postcard (138 × 87 mm), with the artwork credited to G.D. Armour; 'Survey Coy. R.E., B.S.F. No. 364' is printed at the foot of the recto. Corners slightly creased and marked; in very good condition. The card was postmarked on 4 December 1917 at 'Army Post Office SX 13' (Eurendzik, Greece), and carries a 'Passed Censor' inkstamp. It was sent without a message (other than 'On Active Service') to a Miss Eileen Turvey in Gormanston, Tasmania.

The mounted photograph has recently been hinge-mounted and matted in archival materials, ready for framing (visible image size 325 × 443 mm, with trifling blemishes to the edges now behind the mat); apart from three minute spots of surface loss near the left-hand edge, the photograph is in excellent condition. This print comes from the original 1915 Australian exhibition of Hurley photographs; this was a slightly enlarged version of the London exhibition held earlier in the same year. The full title of the Australian exhibition catalogue is 'Exhibition of Unique Photographic Pictures taken during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Also other Photographic Studies by Frank Hurley' (small octavo, 16 pages plus 8 full-page plates and the title-wrappers; printed in Adelaide by G. Hassell & Son). A very large sepia-toned gelatin silver photograph, flush-cut on the original thick card mount, recently mounted and matted using archival materials (visible image size 417 × 589 mm, external mat size 602 × 757 mm), ready for framing (or long-term storage in its custom-made Mylar sleeve). Minimal conservation to trifling surface blemishes in the top left-hand corner, and a touch of pale silvering-out aound the edges; in excellent condition. Significantly, this dramatic image of an expeditioner on skis, silhouetted against gigantic ice cliffs, features Xavier Mertz, one of the two men to lose their lives on the expedition. This photograph is reproduced in 'The Home of the Blizzard' with the caption 'Adelie Land. The cliffs at Land's End, Cape Denison, on the brow of the cliff in front of the figure (Mertz), is a good example of a snow cornice' (Volume 1, opposite page 178). A very large vintage blue-toned carbon print, on the original oversized thick card mount, recently mounted and matted using archival materials (visible image size 557 × 720 mm, external mat size 750 × 902 mm), ready for framing (or long-term storage in its custom-made Mylar sleeve). Uniform light tanning, with slight crazing to the emulsion on the darkest of the rocks on the right-hand side; in very good condition. This print comes from the original 1915 London exhibition of Hurley photographs. The label of the Fine Art Society, New Bond Street, London is on the verso of this print, with the title (as above) and the London catalogue reference number 102 in ink. Saddle-stapled pictorial wrappers slightly rubbed and faintly tanned; front cover of the first two volumes slightly nibbled; overall an excellent set.

An original vintage sepia-toned gelatin silver photograph (image size 300 × 248 mm), on the original thick card mount (442 × 354 mm), with the caption, in duplicate typescript on paper, mounted on the bottom margin. The mount is lightly foxed, with a few pinholes close to the top and bottom edges; there is a tiny surface chip to a bottom corner tip of the photograph, and minimal silvering-out; overall, in excellent condition. The verso of the mount contains a slightly different caption in Mountford's hand: 'A stone supposed to be the head of a poisonous Snake. Rubbing the stone causes sickness to one's Enemys [sic]. Ayers Rock'. The amendments appearing in the typed version are also pencilled in here. There are two small cloth tabs affixed near the top edge on the verso, suitable for hanging the item; a number in another hand ('1' in a circle, written in indelible pencil) suggests this print was exhibited at some stage. The original 1968 edition had a second volume consisting of maps (not published in this facsimile edition).

A bifolium (217 × 150 mm), comprising the details of the occasion on the first page, with the last page ruled for signatures; the centrespread is blank; a few light marks and a couple of smudged signatures; in very good condition. There are eleven signatures, complete with rank and unit details, ranging from LAC (J.W. Dugan, whose souvenir this is) to Lieutenant Colonel (John Henry Polglaze). Phair's Hotel, on the south side of upper central Collins St, was demolished in 1960.
