Description:
London, Palestine Exploration Fund, 1889. 8vo. Original illustrated wrappers; pp. vi, [7]-51, folding frontispiece plan, wood-engraved illustrations in the text; contained in the Quarterly Statement of the Palestine Exploration Fund, July, 1889; spine of wrappers a little chipped, otherwise fine. First edition of this archaeological examination of the ancient settlement in the north eastern corner of modern Jordan. Following his engineering studies in Stuttgart Schumacher worked as the chief engineer of the Province of Akko, in which position he was responsible for the design of many buidings and civil engineering projects, including the Damascus-Haifa railway. His outstanding achievement was the survey of Golan, Ajlun and the Hauran, supported by the Palestine Exploration Fund, founded in 1865, the oldest exploration society of the Levant, who hold him in such high esteem that their logo is a reproduction of the gilt-stamped vignette on the front cover of Schumacher's later Northern 'Ajl√Ľn.

[Christchurch], Whitcombe and Tombs, [c. 1946]. Small 4to. Original illustrated wrappers; pp. 63; illustrated after photographs; wrappers a little frayed, otherwise good. First edition, very rare. 'A Leander-class light cruiser, HMS (later HMNZS) Achilles displaced 7270 tons, measured 555 ft (169 m) in length and was capable of 32 knots. It was armed with eight 6-inch (152 mm) guns in four turrets, four 4-inch (102 mm) secondary guns and eight 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes, and also carried a seaplane. Following its role in the Battle of the River Plate, Achilles underwent repairs in Auckland before escorting troop convoys and operating against Japanese forces in the southwest Pacific. During operations with US Navy forces off Guadalcanal on 5 January 1943, the ship was damaged by a Japanese air attack that killed 13 crewmen. While undergoing repairs in Portsmouth in June that year, an accidental explosion killed several dock workers and caused further damage. In 1945 Achilles joined the British… Read more

First edition. A superb account of Cameron's journey from the east to the west coast of Africa, relating details of the customs and manners of the indigenous people encountered along the way. Cameron's route across Africa, from the mainland opposite Zanzibar to Benguela in Angola, is clearly illustrated on the large and detailed folding map. Cameron had begun his career in the Navy and served in the Red Sea in the 1860s in order to suppress the slave trade, where he learned Swahili and some Arabic. In about 1870 Cameron was appointed to the steam reserve at Sheerness,… Read more

1908. London, Duckworth & Co., 1908. 8vo. Original green cloth, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt dust-wrappers (not price-clipped, library film); pp. [x], 124; spine of wrappers sunned, a very good copy; provenance: inscribed by Doughty to Sir Israel Gollancz, with an accompanying letter from Doughty to Gollancz tipped onto front fly-leaf.. First edition, presentation copy. Doughty, author of the idiosyncratic Travels in Arabia Deserta (1888), devoted his later life to poetry. He acknowledges in his letter the poor reception his verse plays received at the hands of critics and public alike. Writing on 1st January, 1923, some fifteen years after their original publication, he says of Adam Cast Forth: "It has no doubt many defects which Critics might blame, and that I should regret. (It was hardly noticed when it appeared.)" Doughty's waning literary fortunes were only revived when T.E. Lawrence provided an introduction to a new edition of the Travels (1921). T. E. Lawrence had almost… Read more

Original pictorial boards with wrap-around design, preserved in repeat dustwrapper; pp. [vi], 7-63 + [i]; with drawings throughout by Pauline Baynes printed in black and white and duotones; externally very nearly fine with only tiny rubbing to extremities, internally very good bar some marking, and the neat erasure of a name (through careful bleaching) to front free endpaper, protected by a very fresh, price-clipped, dustwrapper with only very slight rubbing to extremities. First edition. An important addition to the Hobbit saga. A collection of poems including the title verse about Bombadil, which was originally published in slighter form in The Oxford Magazine, in 1934. This nature-spirit, as Tolkien conceived him, first appeared in The Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo Baggins came across him in the Old Forest. Description:
1866. London: Frederick Warne and Company, 1866. 4to., in full red straight-grain morooco, boards and spine richly gilt, all edges gilt. With 100 illustrations including a full-page frontispiece and 99 cuts in the text; pp. [iv], xiii, [i], 710, [ii]; a little spotting to first and last few leaves, otherwise a very good copy in a choice binding. First edition thus in what appears to be a publisher's deluxe binding. With a neat ink presentation inscription "Charles James Jessel May 1873. A present from Emile Merton". Charles Jessel was the son of the famous lawyer, Master of the Rolls, and MP Sir George Jessel. A scarce edition with Arthur Houghton's illustrations engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. The distinctive, angular signature of the Brothers appended to wood-engraved illustrations from the 1840s onwards was readily recognised. Indeed, so widespread was their work and influence during the two decades 1850 to 1870 that their name has become synonymous with Victorian engraving on… Read more

Description:
1850. Butler & Crispe, [no date c. 1850] 4to., single sheet, printed on both sides. A little staining and crinkling, otherwise very good. Advertising leaflet for Dr Hooper's Femail Pills issued by pharmacists Butler & Crispe of 14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road, London. With duty paid stamp attached. John Hooper, an apothecary in Reading, England, patented his ‚ÄėFemale Pills‚Äô in 1743 ‚Äď they are among the earliest and most successful ‚Äėpatent medicines‚Äô sold in England. Promoted as anti-hysteria pills, they were also used for stomach and period problems. An advertisement from the 1750s describes them as ‚Äúthe best medicine ever discovered for young women, when afflicted with what is commonly called the irregularities‚ÄĚ. It was also suggested that pregnant women should not take them, which inevitably led to the pills being used in the hope of ending an inconvenient pregnancy. The pills were still being sold both in England and the United States well into the twentieth century.
