The Accomplished Housekeeper is an abridged version of Francis Collingwood's The Universal Cook and City and Country Housekeeper, itself a rare book, first published in 1792 with a second edition in 1797. Turn-ins decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers. All edges coloured yellow. Front pastedowns have booklabel of Christopher Clark Geest and Winston H. Hagen. Bound in hardcover of white cloth printed in black and white abstract design with a colour photo pastedown on front cover. Titled in raised white lettering on front cover. Cover is clean and near fine with slight rubbing to the head and foot of the spine. Hundreds of black and white, and colour photographs. Fine "Samaras"s almost obsessional self-observation extends past narcissism toward a physical understanding of himself." An interesting and scarce overview of Samaras' career of image manipulation to date.

South Africa n.p. 1900-1901, 1900. Forty-seven black and white photographs (53x78mm) mounted back-to-back in thick card mounts (104x130mm) bound in a maroon morocco small oblong album (110x135mm). One photograph is missing. Sympathetically rebacked and in very good condition. The grey mounts are all inscribed in pencil with descriptions of the photographs and the occasional comment. Apart from a stain on the front pastedown and the first mount (not affecting the photograph) it is in excellent condition internally. A few of the photographs are showing some slight fading but are still visible. The front pastedown has the inscription "To my wife as a small Xmas present from the Sunny South December 1901". Whether the wife of our anonymous soldier appreciated this Christmas present we will never know but it is certainly a very good, personal record of life in South Africa during the Boer War, the descriptions of each photograph adding depth and resonance. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard and seven illustrations with tissue guards. Sitwell's study of Alexander Pope. Original yellow buckram, gilt lettered on spine, top edge gilt, others uncut, contained in a rubbed and generally worn bright green slip case. One leaf marked; a very good copy. Edith Sitwell's eighteenth century has been described as "emphatically not an age of rationalism, but of eccentricity". Sitwell imagines Pope "as a misfit in a world that insisted on sameness, an artist of gleeful perversity who delighted in cataloguing the absurdities of dunces. Sitwell was writing a passionate defence of an ill, odd, disfigured, ostracized poet whose work was a way of getting through the 'long disease' of life". (Alexandra Harris, Romantic Moderns, p65)

Original illustrated wrappers with original illustrated dustjacket. Very slight chipping and a small closed tear to head of spine of dust jacket and slight fading to spine but otherwise in very good condition throughout. Peake's illustrations play on the dark surrealism of Alice suggesting a wild fantastical humour. These were Alice illustrations for the mid-twentieth century. This Stockholm edition of 1946 predates by eight years the first publication of Peake's Alice drawings in England.

Bound in black morocco for Herb Yellin of the Lord John Press (whose name is stamped in gilt to the foot of the spine). The title "Film Directors" is stamped on the upper cover and the business card of Herb Yellin is taped onto the front pastedown. Marbled endpapers. Hinges reinforced although a number of gutters are cracked. However, the condition is immaterial because this book is, essentially, a high-class, top of the range, premier league autograph album which Yellin carried with him for many years, pressing it on Hollywood A-listers and getting them to sign their names. Overall a very nice copy, with an excellent provenance, of the expanded second edition dedicated to Samuel Johnson who had written to thank Wilson for the copy of the first edition. The text contains an autobiographical sketch and essays and statements by fifty art historians. In 1908 he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts, and soon became active in radical circles such as the Cubist movement. In 1923 he became an American citizen. Original blue cloth with gilt decorative design on upper cover. Dust-jacket, torn with loss at head and foot, now protected in a mylar cover. Original illustrated paper covers, with some soiling and a tear to the joint with lower cover. Internally near fine. A nice copy of a rare book which explains the techniques of photographing the female form both nude and clothed "en plein air". Paul Bergon (1863-1912) was both a photographer and a naturalist specialising in images of orchids and nudes. The photographs are beautiful, Bergon being an exponent of 'pictorialism', a movement that sought to create more painterly images in photography rather than simply record the moment. The photographs in this volume capture perfectly Bergon's artistic connections between naturism and naturalism. �

n.p. n.p. 1849, 1841. Four sheets of vellum with fine 19th century law copyist's italic handwriting. 715x570mm. The sheets are bound together at the foot of each sheet with green ribbon and thread. The seal of the South Staffordshire Company (on red wax) is rather cracked while that of the LNWR is on red seal paper. The final page of the document is a plan. The whole is lovely condition, clean, fresh and clear. This is an agreement between The London and North Western Railway Company and The South Staffordshire Railway Company. The LNWR had been formed in 1846 out of the merger of various smaller railway companies. The 1830s and early 1840s had been a chaotic time in the creation of the rail industry as many different companies were vying for new lines and the huge profits they could bring. The present agreement is to enable the South Staffordshire Railway to run its traffic over over line owned by the LNWR between Walsall Junction and Birmingham and to use LNWR buildings at Vauxhall near… Read More

Some slight rubbing to extremities and wear to corners but otherwise very good and in excellent condition internally with the photographs especially well preserved. This album (or anything like) seems to be unrecorded and we have found nothing similar in the auction records.
