Description:
Very rare. Contemporary rich calf, beautifully rebound in matching style. Near fine, especially for the age. The best on the market we've seen. Light toning, foxing and a bit of soiling.
This scarce, official printing of the collected laws passed by the Fifth United States Congress, includes the notorious Alien and Sedition Acts, passed in 1798. 'There are three Alien acts, which grew directly out of the XYZ Affair and the failure of the embassy to France. Debate began in April 1798, as the story was reported to Congress. The first bill, the Naturalization Act, was signed into law on June 18, 1798. It increased the residency requirement for American citizenship from five to fourteen years and created other hurdles to citizenship (the majority of emigrants were supporters of the Jeffersonian Republicans). The second, the Alien Friends Act, was passed on June 25, 1978. It allowed the President to imprison or deport aliens considered 'dangerous to the peace and safety of the United States.' Description:
First Edition, First Printing. Fine in a fine dustjacket. A major study that traces the history and evolution of writing from ancient times to the present, and discusses how the letters of the alphabet have been invested with political, mystical, and religious significance over the centuries. Folio. A wonderful copy.
Long regarded as a divine gift, the alphabet has been seen not just as a collection of arbitrary signs but as the direct visual embodiment of meaning. Pythagoreans, Kabbalists, neo-Platonists, and medieval Catholic mystics regarded the alphabet as a code that explained the universe. Drucker (art history, Yale) examines these and other ideas about the origins and inherent meanings of the alphabet, relating them to their intellectual milieu. She also discusses developments in the forms of the letters. She notes, for example, how modern typefaces, first developed in the late 18th century, embody Enlightenment philosophy. Her well-written discussion is enriched with over 300 illustrations… Read More

Description:
First Deluxe Limited Edition thus. One of 200 copies printed, (this one unnumbered), on the occasion of the American Bicentennial, this copy being unnumbered. A stunning work. Fine in dark blue half-bound goatskin over beautiful hand-marbled boards by Barnard & Jackson, lettered in gilt within a circular leather onlay on the front cover. Presented in a near fine lightly rubbed blue cloth slipcase. Illustrated with 30 hand-colored maps, all but one of which fold-out, and many of which are two pages. Pages are hand-numbered. First published in 1776, this was one of the first major atlases of the Americas.
This extremely high quality facsimile was based on the hand colored copy of the original held by the Royal Geographical Society and was issued to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The Maps cover the whole of the Americas, but the majority focus on the then known areas of North America. This beautiful copy is quite large and heavy, and may require additional postage.
