A charming early view of Amsterdam, Netherlands with ships in the foreground and the town in the background. Economic prosperity abounded during the 17th century coining it the "Golden Age" for Dutch culture. Much of this wealth stemmed from sea trade both within Europe and overseas in Africa, Asia and the Americas. After working at several jobs in Melbourne, he assisted fellow German photographer Conrad Wagner before opening taking over the management in 1869. He opened his own studio in 1873.
