Description:
New York: The Literary Guild, 1927. A collection of original essays, stories, and poems by 72 writers of the 1920s. Contributors include Robert Penn Warren, Ernest Hemingway, Eugene O'Neill, and Gertrude Stein. Decorative endpapers. Black cloth with gilt titling on spine and on front cover. Corners and margins show wear and the spine has faded. Front hinge a bit loose; rear hinge has pulled away and is loose. Harry Crosby's 1929 diary describes a party where "Kay Boyle made fun of Hart Crane and he was angry and flung The American Caravan into the fire because it contained a story of Kay Boyle's (he forgot it had a poem of his in it)". That would have been The Second American Caravan (Boyle wasn't in the first.). With Hart Crane's bookplate in state F: (white gummed paper, measuring 3 1/8 in. x 4 3/8 in.) on the front paste-down end-paper, applied (by Samuel Loveman) after Crane's death, probably in the mid-1950s. [See K. Lohf, "The Library of Hart Crane," Proof, Vol. 3, 1973]. Contains the first…

Description:
1929. Autograph postcard signed by Hart Crane, to Samuel Loveman, from Paris, 1929. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Addressed to Samuel Loveman, dated March 5th, 1929. Sent from Paris on the same day as an important letter to Otto Kahn concerning the dedication to "The Bridge," the "Cape Hatteras'" section of which was completed at this time. The text reads: "Still waiting for some word from you! Jack Taylor, freshly arrived, is staying at my hotel. Also met Forrest Anderson, who manages to live here somehow and who haunts the cafés. Yes, I'm more than ever enthusiastic. Never want to leave. Such grace, such intelligence, such courtesy! Whoever thinks the French to be decadent just doesn't know! Love, as ever, Hart", with a postscript concerning Greek vases at the Louvre. This is a vital document concerning Crane's fraught and ultimately disastrous Parisian jaunt. It remains unpublished, in spite of the considerable attention paid to this period, to Crane's exuberant mood, and to his contact with Loveman (see…

Description:
London: John Murray, 1818. Second edition, with additions. Two volumes, 8vo., Volume I, lxvi, 44; II., 344, Vol. II, 344 pp. Contemporary half Russia, bound without half titles; extremities a little worn, light foxing (mostly on the first and last few pages). Each volume is inscribed and signed by Mariner, a rare find, although the presentee's name was removed. "A key historical text on the history and culture of [the Tongan] island group" Forbes. Mariner was a young British sailor on the Port au Prince, a whaler which sailed in 1805, but spent much of her time attacking Spanish shipping. In the spring of 1806 she captured two ships, the brig Santa Isidora and the corbeta Santa Maria, both of which were then sent to Port Jackson to be sold. The Port au Prince visited Hawaii in late 1806, then sailed with a number of Hawaiian crew. At Tonga the crew mutinied, and most were massacred by the natives, but Mariner came under the protection of the King and lived there as his adopted son for four years.…
