Evenson exhibits a cool morbidity not often present in American fiction. The result is strange-and strangely fascinating.

Warren Grant Magnuson was an American lawyer and politician who represented the state of Washington in Congress for 44 years, first as a Representative from 1937 to 1944, and then as a senator from 1944 to 1981. Magnuson was a member of the Democratic Party. Deliberately controversial: its grand aim is to unite right, left, and center in the exultant march of a continous American Revolution. Boggs appeals to militants of both extremes, as well as to conservatives and passive hippies, to abandon their negative and disruptive principles. He sees their interests, behavior and divisions inviting dangers from abroad and totalitarianism at home.
