Description:
Scarce 1758 Almanac with Great F&I War Content
This almanac provides vivid insight into the impact of the French & Indian War on the American colonies. A fiery poetic narrative is carried through at the head of each monthly calendar page. For instance, August's verse:
"This Month, alas! Proclaims a double Woe,
Both 'Swego and Lake George our Losses know;
Fort William-Henry felt the fatal stroke

From faithless Villains. Who their promise broke,
False to their Words, our Men became their Prey;
And do we yet a just Revenge delay."
Following the calendar pages is a four-page "Continuation of the Historical Account of Affairs in North America…" which provides a summary of military actions from the loss of the fort at Oswego in August, 1756 through "the last Day of August, 1757, since which we can add no further Intelligence."
Also of significance is a full page devoted to "A short discourse on Comets, with some account of that which is expected to appear in the present year 1758." It references Dr.… Read More

Description:
Washington's First State of the Union Address & Jefferson's Report on Currency, Weights and Measures
Mathew Carey's American Museum was published from January, 1787 to December, 1792. According to Mott, it shared with The
Columbian Magazine the honor of being America's first successful magazine. This is volume eight (of twelve volumes with six issues each) with the issues from July through December, 1790.
The volume contains two signature pieces from the early Federal period -- Washington's first State of the Union address (Appendix II, pp. 47-48) and Jefferson's report on currency, weights and measures (Appendix II, pp. 35-46). Among the other noteworthy content is Ferdinando Fairfax's "Plan for liberating the negroes within the United States," essentially a gradual, voluntary, government-assisted emancipation with relocation of the freed slaves to a new colony in Africa.

Description:
This Act of Parliament made it illegal to harvest trees that were "fit for masts, not being the property of any private person" in many of the North American colonies. The fine for felling such a mast-worthy tree was one hundred pounds sterling for each offense. In addition, the Act instructed the Surveyor General of Her Majesties Woods "to mark with the broad arrow all such trees as now are, or hereafter shall be fit and proper to be taken for the use of her Majesties Royal Navy, and to keep a register of the same..." An early act asserting Mother England's authority over natural resources in the colonies. [ICN 7519.1.]
