NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1939. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Ownership copy of stage designer Jo Mielziner, with his signature upper right corner dated 1938 of the ffe. ABE LINCOLN was the first production of The Playwrights' Company formed in 1938 by Sherwood along with fellow playwrights Maxwell Anderson, Elmer Rice, and Kurt Weill, for which Mielziner designed the set. Laid-in is a TLS on The Playwrights' Company letterhead, dated July 16, 1949, from Sherwood to Mielziner and his wife Jean. In the letter, Sherwood laments the bad reviews he had just received that morning in the newspapers for MISS LIBERTY, w a Alan Jay Lerner musical for which he had written the book that had opened the night before. Sherwood thanks Mielziner for the opening night telegram and notes that despite the less than enthusiastic reviews for MISS LIBERTY, the audience "was about the friendliest" and noting paranthetcially - "I am sure you remember the barrage of coughing that greeted ABE LINCON IN ILLINOIS".…

Description:
NY: American Field Service. Soft cover. Very Good. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE LETTERS. Eleven copies of the AFS (news)letters variously dated between 1943-1945: Nov 1943 No. 19, Dec 1943 No. 20, Oct 1944 No 30, Dec 1944 No 32, Jan 1945 No 33, Feb 1945 No 34, Mar 1945 No 35, Apr 1945 No 36, May 1945 No 37, Jun-Jul 1945 No 38, and Sep 1945 No 40. Founded during WWI AFS were volunteer "ambulancers", largely from American families of substantial means. The service was reconstituted in WWII, sending ambulance units first to France and then to the British Armies in North Africa, Italy, India-Burma and with the Free French for the final drive from southern France to Germany. The letters in these publications are eyewitness accounts, many written as daily diaries, of the work of individual volunteers in those campaigns. Each issue measures 8.5x11", with a photographic or pictorial cover, issues varying in length from 24-26 pages, stapled spines. A few covers detached, most worn about edges.

NY: (The New Yorker), 1965. No Binding. Near Fine. Copy, likely a pull sheet or dummy from The New Yorker. of an Alan Dunn cartoon lampooning car safety features advocated by consumer activist Ralph Nader, sometime 1965, when his groundbreaking book "Unsafe at Any Speed" was published. Copy itself measures 10" x 11.25' matted to approx 18" x 18" with the clear acetate over just the matt printed with cartoon caption. Drawing is of a suburban woman in sporty convertible having driven through a farm fence on a country rode getting ticketed by a policeman. The caption, addressed by the driver to the officer, reads: "Unfortunately I was waiting until 'Unsafe at Any Speed' came out in paperback". Provenance: From the library of publisher Richard Grossman, who published Nader's book after it had been rejected by every "established" US publishing house. The book launched the success of Grossman Publishers and Grossman and Nader remained friends until Grossman's death in 2014.
