Hardcover, full brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, blindstamped ruled borders to boards, brown clay-coated endpapers, large folding map as frontispiece, 7-3/4" tall, 452 pp. + 2 pp. publisher's ads. Map color is nice, a few tape reinforcements, but generally attractive, front hinge probably repaired at some point, owner's name to title page, small burn hole to ads (no text loss). Generally, a nice clean copy. During the Reconstruction era, Schuyler Colfax (then Speaker of the House, but soon to be Vice President under Ulysses S Grant), traveled across the Western United States, and the book includes his views of early Los Angeles, a conversation with Brigham Young, observations of nature, including the Sequoias, etc. Although partly a rousing Republican political book, it is primarily of interest for its narrative and map of the barely-settled West.

Laid in is an envelope labeled by hand "Menus" which contains 22 menus from Albertina's from the mid-1980s. Albertina Kerr Center has been in Portland, Oregon for over a century, devoted to caring and supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, and other social barriers. At the time of this cookbook, they had a public restaurant, staffed almost entirely by volunteers. "The image created by Albertina's is that of serving a delicious three-course luncheon in a gracious private home. Emphasis is on serving fresh produce in season, and that which is Oregon grown." The envelope of menus is a very nice addition to this copy.

Aldington is best remembered for his World War I poetry, the 1929 novel, Death of a Hero, and for his 1955 Lawrence of Arabia: A Biographical Inquiry.

There are several plants pressed between the pages with minimal ghosting, a few scattered words underlined or margin lines.

Small, Maynard and Company, 1898. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. Binding designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue with his monogram to front cover, second edition. Hardcover, full brown ribbed cloth with gilt rules, lettering and decoration to front board and spine, 7" tall, 115 pp.. Modest bump to head of spine. Bertram Goodhue was primarily an architect, but he is probably best remembered in the book world for designing the Cheltenham typeface. Although he was involved in the Arts & Crafts movement, it is his architectural style which is most influential in this book design featuring an array of bugles within ruled borders with maple-leaf corners.
