London: S. W. Fores, April 30, 1791. First Edition. 18th Century broadside of song lyrics and hand-colored etching of foxhunting scene. Uncommon in physical form. Dibdin (1745-1814) was a singer-songwriter nearly two centuries prior to the elevation of that combination. (There were always composers who publicly performed their own music, of course.) He was more versatile than that, though. He also wrote operas, novels, and plays. He collaborated with legendary theater manager David Garrick, and served for a time as the Music Director at Covent Garden. The "Oddities", for which this song was written, was performed in 1789. Visible part of broadside under glass and matting, 36 by 24 cm. With wood frame and matting, 50 by 36.5 cm. The frame is of a burled cherry, we believe, the matting, green, with a thin white beveling, and we believe most would find the framing attractive and worth retaining.

Near Fine. 8vo. xxxi, 275 pp. Personal account of New York City history, with an emphasis on the equine (horse-racing, trotter) scene, but touching on many other aspects of Old New York. The extensive index is very handy in locating a vast miscellany of New York life of the mid- to late19th century. Also with illustrated plates, mostly of equine interest. Light soiling to the gray cloth. Clean and tight within.

Burlington, Vermont: C. Goodrich, 1854. First Edition. Half Morocco. Very Good. An anti-slavery screed, written with bite and satire, and published in Vermont. Bookplate of Hall Park McCullough, the patriarch of one of the most prominent Vermont families, and tipped in is a handwritten letter, dated October 31st, 1878, establishing the identity of the anonymous authorship. 8vo. 23 by 14 cm. 64 pp. Original wraps bound in. Wear to the joints, and some starting. Scattered light stains.

Boston: Walter H. Baker & Co., 1925. 11 short minstrel skits, all offensive to today's sensibilities. Coes was primary playwright of these playlets. 8vo.

Spectacular souvenir of annual ball just as Paris was rapidly regaining its footing following the hardships and scarcities of the Second World War. No. 2455 of unspecified number of copies in "Limitation". Contributors include a good number of t he most distinguished men of French letters of the day, including Camus, Jean Cocteau, 4to. 28 by 24 cm. Unpaginated, 192 pages. With four full color plates on a thicker card stock, as are a few other leaves. Many of the pages with color background, and some vignettes with full color illustration. Royal Arcade London W: Leonard Smithers, 1898. First Edition. Cloth (quarter white cloth over orange cloth). Very Good. 8vo. 23 by 14.5 cm. Blank, colophon, half title leaf, title leaf, dedication leaf, 31 pp. One of 830 copies in first issue, this being one of 800 on hand-made Dutch Van Gelder paper. Published pseudonymously, with C.3.3. standing for WIlde's cell location in the prison. Copy with ownership inscription or autograph of Elliott F. Shepard, the husband of a Vanderbilt heiress (Daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt, and grand-daughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt), who was himself a founder of the New York Bar Association and the owner of a New York newspaper of the day. The cover has a fair amount of soiling, both a bit of grubbiness and some more pronounced, although not large, stains or spots of color loss. Spine gilt lettering still readable but a touch faded. Cover decoration bright and festive, gilt on red boards. Binding tight. Charming verse in 18th century nostalgic revival led by Dobson, a popular poet subsequently much maligned by the effete Sitwell clan.

N.d., circa 1890. 4to. 30.5 by 22. 32 pp. With seven chromolithographic plates in text, and eighth one referred to in title appearing on front cover (this can be deduced by lack of offsetting anywhere else, thus showing no plate was removed). Scarce. Stories of small boy and his dog. Heavy age toning, with foxing on first few pages. Wear to cover.

Philadelphia: The Barker, Moore & Mein Medicine Co. Printed by Theodore Leonhardt & Son. Wraps. Wraps. N.d., circa early 1890s. Oblong 8vo. 17.5 by 26.5 cm. 143 pp. There are various versions and formats of this collection of humorous cartoon advertisements for Barker's various remedies, this being early, and perhaps the earliest, of the collections. The cartoons sometimes play into the rampant Rascism of the day. The most prevalent aspect, though, is allusions to the political scene. Many of the cartoons are anthropomorphic. While there are sometimes long captions, the humor is primarily visual, and it is the visual element that can still generate an appreciative chuckle, as the text, besides being dated and making what are now esoteric allusions, is too laden with Barker product promotion. The pages are heavily toned, as to be expected with the cheap paper stock used. Small corner chip on cover. Light wear besides.

San Francisco: F.R. Brodie & Co. Wraps. Good. Scarce, with only known institutional copy at California State, according to OCLC First Search. N.d., circa 1890. 8vo. 23 by 14.5 cm. Unpaginated, 44 pages of content. With testimonials, and also a basic description of the museum rendered in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese. The artwork for the panorama wa spearheaded by a Mr. Austen, a "world-renowned battle artist", who coordinated we are told art specialists from France and Germany working in New York and at the battle scene location. The canvas here wa 400 feet long, 50 feet wide and required four tons of paint. We are also informed that the museum was soon to have wax figures produced with a new process. The one illustration in the brochure, inside front cover, is of the exterior of the museum. Condition; heavy soiling of cover.

Wakefield: Eliza Eve Gleadall at Heath Hall, 1834. First Edition. Half Morocco. Fine. A flower "sentiment" book that transcends the genre! Privately printed, with only 115 copies produced for the list of subscribers. Small folio, measuring 13.5 by 10 inches, or 33.5 by 25.5 cm. viii, 40 pp., plus 20 hand-colored botanical plates, as well as title garland vignette. Nissen 715. Note a second series was issued two years later. Some scattered very light foxing on text leaves. Plates are very clean and bright. Modern half morocco binding is pristine.

Very Good. 4to. 28 by 21.5 cm. 47 pp. Bridge designs, some picturesque, others, Art Deco, using fieldstone or cement, to cover typically streams and smaller rivers, with culverts forming the shell. The bridges depicted will be the kind that are familiar sights nowadays on older parkways and country roads. Small dampstain and other light soiling on cover. Clean within.

Each chromolithographic plate is accompanied by two pages of text describing the epoch and the woman representing it. The women include a druidess, a Roman maid, a Saxon, a Norman, a "White Rose of York", one from the early Tudor period and one from the Elizabethan Age, a Puritan maiden, ones from the reigns of King Charles II, Queen Anne and George II and finally, a woman from Regency England. Clean and tight within, with the original decorative endpapers. Light soiling and edgewear to the binding. Tissue guards intact.

With signature of mid-20th century bestselling journalist and current affairs author John Gunther on FEP. 8vo. 449 pp. First issue points -- no publisher's seal on colophon page, no ads in back. Text block clean, with normal age toning of leaves. Pages 13 to 53 with upper right tiny dog-earing, which can be greatly ameliorated but we believe ot 100 percent cured, in the sense there will still remain a faint evidence of the creasing. Cloth abraded in lower right corner of front cover, similar fraying, wear, upper spine extremity. Lesser wear, lower spine extremity. Gilt lettering on spine has lost its lustre. Small edge dent, rear upper edge. A light film or distribution of soiling on cover. Best to look at photos with some care, or request photos, to judge these issues.

New York and Chicago: J. L. Taylor. Leporello. Near Fine. N.d., circa early 1920s. 18 by 10 cm. Four panel leporello promotional circular for men's suits. Illustrations are rendered with color printing. The men are all wearing boaters, suggesting spring and summer weight suits. They are tall and very slender, with the chiseled looks that were the ideal -- not so different from a lot of male fashion models of today, really. The front of the fold-out features a cut-out or shaped young women of the era, and from her dress we can surmise that the circular was issued in the very early twenties. J. L. Taylor had a large tailoring operation in both Chicago and New York until the Second World War. Specializing in pure wool fabrics for men's clothing, it employed hundreds of tailors and seamstresses. Scarce, with no copies found on OCLC. An inked name of the recipient in space intended for such on front. Otherwise, minimal wear, especially considering this was mailed.

Cover with flattened corner creases. Tiny chip upper left front cover by spine. Light rubbing along joints. Overall, though, a very tight copy.
