London: Ray Society, 1912 Two volume set (1912-1913), with volume II containing most of the plates. In original Ray Society binding which has been rebacked mostly preserving the original spines. There is some fraying to the spine and the corners are rubbed but the binding is otherwise in good clean condition. There are small library numberings to the base of spines. Contents in good clean condition including 72 plates in volume II - many of which are coloured. There are small round library stamps of Gloucestershire Public Libraries at various points, including at the top right hand corner of each plate.

Explorations Ltd, 1973 A very good copy of the scarce 1st limited edition - no 458 of 500 copies - signed by the author. In the original yellow light card binding which is secured by staples. The binding is clean with a slight crease at the bottom corner of the front cover and very light turning to corners. Couple of small spots on the back cover. Cover just starting to escape from top staple. Internally there is a pencil ownership signature at the front. Contents are very clean - the staples are a bit rusty but have not coloured the surrounding paper.

London: Frederick Warne & Co., Ltd, 1959 A very good 2 volume set of British Beetles in good dust wrappers. Bindings are bright and clean with gilt titles and beetle to front boards. Vol I has a small cloth crease to the middle of both boards; Vol II has a small cloth crease in the middle of the back board. Page edges marbled. Vol I has decorative endpapers and Vol II plain endpapers - both with an ownership signature to the fep. Vol I: First Series with 19 colour and 20 black and white plates, 300 pp with 4 plain pages for notes at the rear. Couple of tiny holes at the front endpaper joint and small repaired edge tear at the top of p 189. Contents very clean. London : Herbert Jenkins Limited A good copy of the 6th printing in a good wrapper. Undated but circa 1940 - with Quick Service listed in the adverts at the rear and on the wrap. The book has an orange cloth binding with black titles. The binding is very bright and clean. The spine is cocked to the front and there is a small indentation at the top edge of the back board in the middle, and the back board is slightly warped. Light pulling to spine ends and light scuffing to edges and corners. There is an inscription dated 1943 at the top of the front pastedown. The paper is lightly toned throughout (some darker toning at the endpapers) but the contents are very clean. There is some spotting at the page edges. 4pp of adverts at the rear. London : Caxton Publishing Company A good copy, complete with 115 colour-printed plates in new quarter cloth binding with marbled boards. Undated but 1907/8. The plates by Henrik Gronvold and Frederick Frohawk are beautiful. The binding is 'as new' with new endpapers.Top page edges gilt, remainder untrimmed. Contents - Vol I: 4 plates of eggs; title page; contents list; introduction; text with 56 plates; 210pp. Vol II: 4 plates of eggs; title page; contents; text with 51 plates; appendix; index 215pp. Text pages with some spotting, particularly to top margins, and light toning towards edges. Plates with tissue guards, some of which are creased or with slight damage. Plates themselves clean and mostly not affected by spotting. Contents slight dusty smell on opening.

Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1890 A good to very good copy illustrated with numerous drawings by the author. In the original green cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. Top page edges gilt. The spine is faded with pulling and some fraying to the top and bottom. Both boards have slight marking with the back board having a small cloth scuff. Corners lightly bumped and with wear. Internally there is some early splitting at the front endpaper joint. Contents: title with signature to top, decorative title with crease to tissue guard, prefaces, contents and illustration list pp xv; half title Memoir text pp 3-34; half title letters; text pp 37-186; half title extracts from diaries; text pp 189-276; index 277-279; and publisher's catalogue dated October 1890 at the rear. Memoir and diary extracts profusely illustrated with Graham's drawings. Original page marker present - detached. Contents generally in very good clean condition.

London : Herbert Jenkins Ltd A near fine copy of the 5th printing in a very good dust wrapper. Undated but circa 1950. The binding is in maroon cloth with black titles. There is spotting at the top page edge. The wrap is complete and clean, and priced at 5/- on the spine. The spine is slightly darker than the panels and there is a small piece missing from the top edge close to the spine affecting the 'P' of P G Wodehouse. Otherwise there is light edge nibbling with slight loss to the flap fold edges and some surface scuffing down the folds. The latest title on the flap is Nothing Serious. On the verso of the wrap the spine is toned.

London : Herbert Jenkins Limited, 1935 A good copy of the 1st issue of Blandings Castle in contemporary wrapper. The pale blue cloth binding is, as usual, faded to a dark cream on the spine. The boards retain the blue colour with fading round the edges and some spotting - particularly on the front board. The corners are lightly turned. Internally there is a large and flamboyant signature dated August 1938 to the fep. The contents are complete and very clean with the occasional spot to the foredge and some light spotting at pp 154/155. 8 pages of adverts at the rear. The wrap has a sticker for 2/6 on the spine which is covering the original price of 7/6 (still visible if viewed from the inside under strong light). LONDON : Hutchinson and Co, 1934 A VG copy in the original decorative cloth with 16 full page colour plates by H M Brock. Nichols selected ballads from a wide range of sources and this collection includes The Gaberlunzie Man, Sir Lancelot du Lake, Thomas the Rhymer, and The Earl of Mar's daughter. The illustrations are superb. In light brown cloth binding with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and the spine. With decorative endpapers and numerous black and white designs by Brock in addition to the plates. The binding has light bumping to corners. There is a neat ink signature to one of the preliminaries. The contents are in excellent condition.

London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1902 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original blue gilt decorated cloth binding with tissue-guarded colour frontispiece and 7 further colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations by H J Ford as called for. With decorative endpapers with different designs front and rear. All page edges gilt. The binding has been rebacked, relaying the original spine, so is sound and tight. The front board and spine are bright and clean with gilt decoration that is slightly dulled. Couple of paler marks on the back board. Corners rubbed with wear and slight cloth loss. The endpapers have professional repair at the joints. The free endpapers have light browning, and there is an old bookseller's blind stamp at the top of the fep. The contents are very clean with light toning to paper. There is some light marking in the side margins of pp 234 and 235.

London : Ward, Lock and Tyler A poor copy of the 2nd edition of Mrs Beeton's Household Management, dated around 1869. This copy is classed as 'poor' because it lacks frontispiece, title page and all preliminaries - the book starts at Chapter 1. The paper quality is extremely poor, with text and plate pages brown-toned and having brittle and friable edges. The book was 'rescued' by Colin Kerr, an Orkney craftsman, specialising in furniture-making, wood sculpture and bookbinding. He undertook a number of commissions for the local council to rebind books in commemorative bindings as gifts. As an avid book collector, he bound some of his own - particularly those in a poor state. The full leather binding has raised bands to spine and a decorative title label. It is clean and sound. New endpapers and page marker have been added. The contents from Chapter 1 onwards appear complete with 1,139pp and 11 colour-printed plates. London : Strand Publications A fair copy of Bookano No 4 with 5 pop up models. The pictorial binding is very scuffed and worn and has lost much of the picture on the spine and a large chunk of picture from the back board. Contents generally clean apart from one black and white illustration which has been part coloured in and has lost some surface. The pop ups all work: the first pop up has a bent tree which does not pop up properly, but the rest look good. Text pages generally brown toned.

London : Simpkin & Marshall, 1825 Volumes I - VII of the 1st edition of Maund's Botanic Garden ranging in date from 1825 to 1836 (Vol VII is undated) with 167 of 168 fine hand coloured plates. It was originally issued in parts and these volumes are in what looks like an original publisher's cloth binding which is worn and disintegrating with some poor stitching, so this set has been priced to take account of rebinding costs. The book is in a square octavo format and text pages are printed on one side only. The contents are clean and bright with beautiful colouring on the plates (faults are listed in the detailed description below). There is some offsetting where particularly strong colour has been applied and shows through to the back of the plates. All have a decorative title page and an additional title page. Paternoster Row. & C Loddiges & Sons, Hackney, 1824 A scarce complete volume of Loddiges' Botanical Cabinet, with 100 hand coloured plates engraved by George Cooke. Conrad Loddiges founded a plant nursery business in Hackney and the family became famous for exotic and rare plants. The mauve rhododendron that has become common in Great Britain today was imported by Conrad Loddiges. The Botanical Cabinet showcases the rare plants that they imported and grew. This volume is volume X, dated 1824. In contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards and endpapers. Top page edges gilt. The spine has gilt compartments and elaborate gilt tooling. There are title and volume labels. Internally there is a decorative title page and then a series of plates, each followed by a brief description on a separate page. Edinburgh: George Mosman, 1701 A good to very good copy of the scarce 1st Edition of John Brand's account of Orkney and Shetland at the start of the eighteenth century. John Brand was a Minister and was appointed to join a delegation to the Northern Isles in 1700/01. As a Minister he had a particular interest in religious affairs, but the book contains rare accounts of the population, land use, occupation and social life. The book is in a later full calf 1800's binding with gilt lines, date and title label to spine. There is wear to the joints and to the top and bottom of the spine, but it is sound and clean. There is some corner wear. Internally there is the bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian, to the front pastedown. Edinburgh: William Brown, 1883 A good copy of the limited facsimile edition of John Brand's work which was first published in 1701. Limited to 157 copies, of which 148 were for sale. This is copy 1. The plain cloth binding is sound, but with marking and there is wear to spine and cloth fraying to corners. It has the original title label. The contents are in very good clean condition. The contents are a replica of the 1701 work, with the addition of a small advert for Haco's Expedition on an initial blank, and a 2 page introduction from the publisher. The text has been printed on hand-made paper and page edges are untrimmed. 4 pages have some light brown toning. Preliminaries pp 1-18; text 1-240 with appendix 241-147.

London & New York: George Routledge and Co, 1858 This is one of the Routledge Standard Novel series. The red cloth case is grubby and worn on the spine and corners and contents are beginning to come loose. There is one black and white plate. Contents are clean.

LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. London : Mary Matthews, for Awnnsham Churchill , 1722 A very good copy of Camden's Britannia, revised by Edmund Gibson, and published in 2 volumes in contemporary full leather binding. Page edges pale yellow. With 51 maps (48 by Robert Morden and 3 by Andrew Johnstone), 9 plates of coins, 2 further full page plates and numerous illustrations in the text. The tree calf bindings have raised bands to spine and title and volume labels. There is some wear to edges and some scuffing to the boards - the back board of Vol I and the front board of Vol II. There is a small (2 cm approx) split at the top of the front spine joint in Vol I. There is no corresponding split internally and the board is firmly attached. The contents are generally in very good clean condition with the very occasional mark. London: The Ray Society, 1925 A very good to near fine set in the original Ray Society cloth bindings with 60 plates of which 18 are coloured or partly coloured. Vol I is inscribed and signed by Chas D Soar at the front free endpaper. The bindings are very bright and clean with slight fading to spines. Light pulling to spine ends. All have small bottom corner tip bumps - in Vol I there is some scuffing to the edge with cloth loss (about 1 cm) just before the bump. Vol I has a small dent to the side edge of the front board. Vol I issued 1925, Vol II 1927, and Vol III 1929. The contents of all are complete and very clean. There is brown toning to free endpapers. The Ray Society publication notes at the rear of each volume are largely unopened.
