The Bronte Press, 2006. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. No. 30 of 35, miniature book, [30] pp., signed by Suzanne Smith Pruchnicki. Ballet experienced serious development as an art form in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Russia, and art critic and ballet patron Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929) had a defining influence on the culture and forms of the dance; he created the Ballet Russes, a ballet dance company from which many notable and talented dancers and choreographers arose. "Ballet After Diaghilev, II" is a collection of portraits of dancers on the scene after Diaghilev, such as Alexander Grant, Mia Slavenska, and Tamara Toumanova, and pairs illustrations with a brief written biography of each dancer. All the illustrations are coloured by hand by Suzanne Smith Pruchnicki (b. 1929), making this book a colourful and intimate look at some of the finest dancers of ballet. ___DESCRIPTION: Full marbled paper, white paper spine label with title in black, title page with hand-coloured… Read More

[Republic of Ireland]: The Dolman Press, 1954. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Cranwill, Mia. One of 225 copies, octavo size, 40 pp. This story "Being the Exile and Death of the Sons of Usnech", a portion of the "Book of Leinster", an Irish manuscript compiled in the middle of the twelfth century. The work translated by Thomas Kinsella (1928-2021), a university professor and poet whose first work was published by The Dolman Press, founded in 1951 specifically to publish Irish poetry, including works by Yeats. The illustrations by Mia Cranwill (1880-1972), "one of the leading artists of the Irish Celtic Revival." She created numerous pieces of metalwork, most of original design, many pieces for high churchmen; George Bernard Shaw referred to her as "the Irish Benvenuto Cellini" (n.b., quotes from Wiki). New York: Harper & Brothers, 1892. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Two volumes (complete), "The Garfield Edition", octavo size, a total of 854 pp., with wrappers and publisher's box. Lewis "Lew" Wallace (1827-1905) was an American Union general as well as author of this famous novel, "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ". It was so well received upon publication that it surpassed "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (which, although many today believe fosters racism, at the time was seen as a powerful proponent for emancipation). Ben-Hur is considered by many to be "the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century" (n.b., quote from "Ben-Hur: The Book That Shook the World" by Amu Lifton (2009), as cited by Wiki). According to the web site of Slate Magazine, it sold "perhaps as many as a million copies in its first three decades in print". This set "The Garfield Edition", was named for President James Garfield who was assassinated in September of 1881, with this edition brought out in his honour. "President James… Read More

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1877. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Duodecimo size, 259 pp., inscribed by "the author" As a current book review stated, "It seems like a dream to have seen the first vessel sailing for this El Dorado in 1848, and now within thirty years to be reviewing the history of an Empire". Not surprisingly for a farm boy (see below), part of this book extolls the "returns of nature to the husbandman" - the review states that "no where in America is the harvest, owing to the freedome from dampness, more certain than in California". The volume contains many more observations and notes on the area, including the giant trees of Yosemite, with measurements given of "the greater monsters", a chapter on the (alas, somewhat prevalent view of the day) of the "Heathen Chinee", and observations on the educational faciliites and charitable institutions, which are claimed to be "second to none". The author offers some interesting observations, such as "Do not try to beat a… Read More

London: Blackie & Son Ltd, 1921. Hardcover. Good +. Wain, Louis; Stewart, E.H.. Folio size, 62 pp. English artist Louis Wain (1860-1939) is known for his trademark anthropomorphic cats, who live in a rich, vibrant world and display playful personalities amidst their alphabetised actions. According to H. G. Wells, "[Wain] has made the cat his own. He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look and live like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (n. b., quote from Wikipedia). For this whimsical alphabet book, Wain creates a series of colour illustrations for each of the twenty-six letters, with captions for each image written in verse. In addition to Wain's ABC section, there are an additional four sections; the second presents the ABCs in a series of hunting scenes (uncredited), the third is also an ABC with anthropomorphic animals of all types (also uncredited); the fourth section, illustrated by E.H. The wood engravings are by Noel Rooke (1881-1953), an English wood engraver and one of the prominent figures in the revival of wood engraving during the twentieth century, who helped to found the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920. He was influential as both an artist and a teacher, and among his students were notable wood engravers such as Vivien Gribble, Robert Gibbings, and Monica Poole. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Comany, 1961. Ninth Printing. Hardcover. Very good +/very good. Octavo size, 186 pp., in dust jacket, inscribed by John Griffin. The year was 1959; while the Civil Rights Movement was gaining momentum, in many parts of America and particularly in the South, African Americans were considered inferior to whites and treated as such. It was in this hostile environment that a white man, John Howard Griffin (1920-1980), decided to "temporarily pass as a black man and journey through the Deep South in order to see life and segregation from the other side of the color line first-hand" (n.b., quote from Wiki). He successfully disguised himself as such to the degree that those who knew him, both African-Americans and whites, did not recognize him. Upon finishing his six weeks of travel Griffin wrote a series of articles for "Sepia" magazine, entitled "Journey into Shame"; this book, "Black Like Me", allowed Griffin to expand the text and it was published in 1961, at which point it… Read More

No. 122 of 375 copies, quarto size, 193 pp., signed by John Hejduk, with LEC Monthly Letter. German writer Thomas Mann (1875-1955), a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, is best known for his novels and short stories employing symbolism and examining the psyche of those in intellectual circles, most famously in his works "Buddenbooks" and "Death in Venice"; he wrote "The Black Swan" in 1954, and the novella revolves around an aging woman who must deal with her changing body and the expectations of an uncaring society that values youth over old age. Noted for being one of the first works to utilise hard medicine in the narrative, "The Black Swan" is here published by the Limited Editions Club, with lithographs by celebrated architect and artist John Hejduk (1929-2000), who brings an architect's eye for symmetry and simplicity in his geometric imagery.… Read More
