Description:
Chicago, M. A. Donohue, 1914. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. Red cloth, a near fine unread copy. First edition. Adams One Fifty 25. Guns 365: This privately printed book was written in a humorous vein, and contains some material on the Dodge City gunmen and Billy the Kid. Like one or two other writers, the author says that the Kid had killed twenty three men when he was himself killed at the age of twenty three. He also says that the Kid worked on a ranch owned by Jesse James, Cole Younger, and three more of their gang and that the Kid stole some cattle from them, whereupon they chased his gang of rustlers and killed all of them except Billy and one other. I corresponded with this old-timer before his death and bought all the remaining copies of his book. It was a very scarce item until I began releasing the remainder, and it is still scarce. Herd 398. Graff 553. Howes C74a.

Description:
Cloth, no dust jacket as issued, very good. First edition, second printing. Guns 655: "the press took over and issued the 'First edition, second printing' with minor corrections. This edition totaled 1,000 copies, 500 in wrappers and 500 in cloth. The book is more a check list than a true bibliography, but each entry contains much information on the content of the book listed, and the author points out many false and inaccurate statements made by the various authors. It is the first complete list of materials on this young outlaw and includes songs, plays, motion pictures, phonograph records, and magazine articles." Dobie p. 140: "In a blend of casualness and scholarship, it gives the substance and character of each item. Indeed, this bibliography reads like a continued story, with constant references to both antecedent and subsequent action. Pat Garrett, John Chisum, and other related characters weave all through it. A first-class bibliography that is also readable is almost a new genre."
