Testimonials, recipes and dubious scientific data proclaiming the healthy benefits of Johnston's Beef tea. John Lawson Johnston (1839-1900) was an Edinburgh butcher with an interest in military and medical provisions. He developed Johnston's Fluid Beef, a beef broth product, in the 1860's after which he procured a contract to sell tins of the Fluid Beef to the French army in 1874. Interior crisp and clean, covers lightly rubbed at spine.

Folding illustrated beer glass accompanied by a list of the 101 best European Cyclists, listed by their last name and their team - including (1) Jesús Loroño and (2) Miguel Poblet. Damm beer is a Spanish brewery located in Barcelona. Clean, crisp and colorful.

The compilers relied on collections at Tennessee Valley Authority Library, Fisk University, Howard University, The Library of Congress, Southern Regional Council in Atlanta and the United States Civil Rights Commission. This lush cookbook brings together the ethnological background of the Luso-Afro-Indian populations through the lens of food. Traditional Brazilian recipes found the meals and flours native to the environment from the Indian population. The Portuguese contributed their codfish and the African slaves brought the dendê oil, condiments, spices and coconut milk. This book is filled with recipes including many featuring beans and rice, coconut, meats, patties, fish, soups, salads, and desserts. Beautifully illustrated by Carybé, better known for his woodcuts in Gabriel García Márquez's books. Interior and boards crisp and clean. Dust wrapper rubbed and chipped. Former owner's book plate pasted in. Covered in protective mylar.

York, England, 1886. Loose_leaf. Folded folio. Very good. 32 x 20 cm. This menu,written by Halliwell, a local master of ceremonies and freemason, was made to accommodate and service the 3rd and 4th battalions' officers of the West Riding Regiment, formerly known as the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. The officers were lodged in the De Grey Rooms, neo-classically designed and constructed by architect George Townsend Andrews in the 1840's. The building was originally built to house the Yorkshire Hussar Regiment. The menu describes breakfast, luncheon, and dinner, with served dishes that include tea, coffee, bacon and eggs, kidneys, cakes, salad, soups, sweets, ices, and more. Menu also informs the officers of prices to pay per diem for services, and the charges the guests and live-in servants must pay for board and food. The second page lists the sums for individual drinks. Delightful acquisition for a connoisseur of English military history. Light fold marks with some toning.

San Francisco: Food Not Bombs, 1994. Loose_leaf. Photocopied handbill. Very good. 21.5 13.5 cm. The first FOOD NOT BOMBS was formed in Cambridge, MA in 1980 by anti-nuclear activists. Food Not Bombs is an all volunteer organization dedicated to nonviolence. With no formal leaders, this International autonomous group shares vegetarian food with hungry people while protesting war and poverty throughout the Americas, Europe and Australia. This flyer for December 5th, 1994 focused on the San Francisco and East Bay area. Small portion of the right side is cut off.

Three paragraphs, gracefully reproduced, focused on the viewpoint that one should not be afraid to read EVERY book. Published by the Dartmouth College Library, Hanover, New Hampshire. Clean, crisp copy.

c. 1920. Shaped black and white photo. Very good. 16 x 11 cm. Black and white photograph depicting, most likely, a college age co-educational student body. Drawing from the handwritten script on the verso of the photo, the students appear to live in the Brooklyn area. The class seems to have at least one white student and one of the male students is wearing a skull and bones on his sweater. Streets mentioned are: Henry St. Franklin St. and Remsen St. Due to the nature of the edges being trimmed, it is difficult to extract further information. 2 cm. closed tear to one edge.

This project was so popular and trendsetting that Queen Victoria and Princess Louise insisted on attending (this book is dedicated to the Prices Louise). Included in this edition is a fascinating lecture Buckmaster gave on the history of 'Early English food and cooking'. Very good. 86 pages, A byproduct of the baking powder wars, fought at the end of the 20th century. After a stable rising agent was established, baking powder became a profitable commodity with over hundred manufacturers popping up across the country. To win over the public, still wed to their old cookbooks, baking powder companies issued their own cookbooks and pamphlets. This book, which is annotated throughout by a hungry observer, is a scientific observation of the product and how to make it. Crisp, clean copy.
