Box 99, Western Central District Office, New Oxford Street, W.C.1, August 1943 to January 1944. Five parts within printed card wrappers in Navy shoestring-bound original cloth folder with lettering on front cover; highly illustrated with folding maps, charts and diagrams; near-fine. This extremely rare top secret publication gives in its first part information on Albania 'pre-invasion', and outlines the country 'post-invasion' (issued in August 1943) in the second part. The third part is the Map Section, which is followed by two supplements, the last of which with the sub-title Political and Local Directory. All we were able to find out about this perfectly disguised publisher is that they used the same street address as for the Who's Who in Nazi Germany. In June 1940, the newly created British Special Operations Executive (SOE) was given the task of encouraging resistance movements in Italian-occupied areas. Albania was of foremost interest because of its geostrategic position and large, sometimes… Read More

[La Valetta, Sold in the Original Malta Bazar by P. Vella & Co. Str. St. Giovanni No. 96, [c. 1840]. Charcoal lithograph of Beirut over across harbour (image sixe 10.9 x 18.9 cm); mounted. 'Charles Frederick de Brocktorff (1775/85 to 1850) [was]an artist of German origin who resided on the island in the first half of the 19th century. Mr Brocktorff had fought in the Napoleonic wars as an infantry officer with the forces of the Electorate of Hanover before moving to England after 1809. When he settled in Malta in circa 1810, he opened an art studio in Valletta where his business prospered and his four artist sons eventually joined to continue to enrich the family enterprise' (timesofmalta.com, Tuesday, December 4, 2007). Prints by Brocktorff are generally very rare, those of the Levant even more so. This battle was fought during the Ottoman-Egyptian War between the joint Austrian, British and Ottoman navy ships against Muhammad Ali's Egyptian forces.

Description:
London, Secker & Warburg, 1943. Small-ish 8vo. Orginal boards with illustrated dust-wrappers; pp. 128, sketch maps; a typical war time book production and rare, even more so in the illustrated dust-wrappers. First edition of a work on the political and spiritual situation of India at the brink of independence, with an essay about Gandhi, and future problems of independence. The book is dedicated to 'Zulfaqar', who is actually Zulfiqar Ali Bukhari, the legendary Radio broadcaster of British India and later Pakistan. He had been born into a family of Sufi mystics and was as well a writer, poet and musician. Fielden had 'served as subaltern at Gallipoli and decided that war was insanity. He was doing brilliantly in the League of Nations and got bored with it. Relief work in Eastern Europe - with Nansen - seemed to him worth while, and so did working for the BBC in its pioneering days; but when the BBC became "a pudding" of bureaucracy he shied off to India where he created All India Radio… Read More
