Description:
8vo, original cloth with gilt lettering, illustrated, 255, [4] pp. Binding a bit worn and faded, joints somewhat cracked, 4 pages loose, some aging and toning; otherwise very good. The author tells us in the preface that Americans often visit other countries before they see there own. He informs the reader they should check out California, and in the first part of the book he provides travel plans for doing that. In the second part of the book, he talks about the impressive agricultural potential of Southern California, and that railroads have opened up new land for settlement. Parts of this book were originally published in Harper's Magazine, the Tribune, and the Evening Post, but the content was revised for book publication.

Description:
Small 8vo, original blind stamped cloth, [2 add], 224 pp. Some rubbing and to the cloth, likely recased, lacking both free endpapers, pencil inscriptions to pastedowns, occasional margin stains within; otherwise about very good.
Marsh was the American Minister to Turkey from 1849-1854, and believed that there would be economic and other benefits of introducing the camel into the United States. His book covers a broad range of issues relating to the camel, including breeds, diet, diseases, temperament and training. Marsh also includes a chapter on the military uses of the camel, which he felt was perfectly suited for modern warfare. According to Marsh the camel "is a much less timid animal than the horse or mule." He even felt the camel offers a better range of vision, because it is two feet higher than the horse. Sabin 44735.

Description:
Autograph Letter signed, blue paper, 4pp plus another partial page. Fold creases, some minor aging, very legible, the last page is a partial, which looks like it was added because the author ran out of space; overall very good. The author of this letter was one M.A. Buck, an American emigrant to Canada. The letter starts out extolling the rapid growth and booming economy of Montreal, Canada., and he seems to believe it would become competitive with her "Yankee neighbors". But the document also describes the consequences of "that unfortunate Gavazzi affair" six months earlier – the Irish Catholic riot against speeches by Italian Monk Alessandro Gavazzi who left the Church to lead an international movement against Catholicism Gavazzi had gone into exile in England, eventually returning to Italy to join Garibaldi and establish his own "Free Church". Meanwhile, in 1853, he came to New York to give lectures in New York, which passed without serious incident. But when he went on to Canada, his speeches… Read More

8vo, pamphlet, removed, dbd, 109 pp. Pamphlet was removed, and part of old binding remains on the spine, title page a little soiled and browned, and a bit loose, dedication to Dr. Le Fevre (pages-iii-iv) is loose and detached, normal aging for the rest of the contents; overall very good.
This is a rather scarce title on the treatment of gout. OCLC locates only three copies, and it does not appear that a copy has come up for auction in many years. The discussion in this work is focused on Dr. Le Fevre's treatment for gout, which includes some review of the medical politics surrounding his treatment. A good portion of the work relates to letters of people who have been treated with Le Fevre's medicine. While not everyone seemed to benefit from his medicine, some of the letters show a very positive impact. A Maynard Colchester of Westbury stated, "I think I have found all the benefit I could expected, in so short of time, from this valuable medicine, and shall ever think myself greatly obliged to you… Read More

Description:
Note card , 4.5x8 cm (1 3/4" 3 1/4"), mounted on a later paper backing, affixed within a custom plastic case; near fine. Douglass (1818-1895) after escaping from slavery, would eventually become one of the most powerful abolitionist spokespersons in America. In his three biographies he chronicled his life from his birth in Tuckahoe, Maryland to his return to the United States from England with a plan to start a newspaper. Douglass presented the brutality of slavery and racism in many episodes, including having his family taken from him at the age of seven, and receiving a savage beating in a Baltimore shipyard where he worked as a laborer by four whites. His life's goal was to promote "the universal and unconditional emancipation of my entire race." This note card comes from 1884, when he was a newlywed to his second wife, Helen Paris, living in Washington D.C. The first name is abbreviated, Fredk, but the signature is clear and highly legible. The card comes with a letter of authenticity. docsouth… Read More

Attractive menu from what appears to be a German type restaurant, although the menu is varied, in Rio De Janeiro, in the Avenida Atlantica section of the city. The menu lists one Johann Krips as the proprietor, and even provides a telephone number. It is rather difficult to date the item, but a good guess would probably be the 1950s or a little earlier. Akeley would make five expeditions to Africa collecting specimens, first for the Field Museum in Chicago, and then for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In 1911 he proposed to Henry Fairfield Osborn, president of the museum, a plan to present animal groups against painted backgrounds that would faithfully recreate the habitat which the animals lived. He had many adventures on the trips to Africa, including one where he was attacked by a leopard. Akeley died on his last expedition in his camp, near Mount Mikeno. Description:
Collection of almost 40 letters, mostly from North Yarmouth, Maine. Envelopes and stamps on most, but a few extra pages. A couple of postcards are included. Some creasing to the envelopes. Normal browning and aging, legibility varies; otherwise about very good. Pretty much ell the letters are to Carl R. Tryon, but some are also for brother George, who were stationed at Camp Devins in 1918. Most of the letters come from North Yarmouth, Maine, and are about ordinary day to day activities. Although one friend tells Carl to keep brother George away from the girls. Camp Devins was extremely hard hit by the Spanish flu, and even though his family seemed to keep the tone of the letters light, in a letter dated September 25, 1818 they sent Carl and George sulphur pills and told him, "if you are afraid you will get it you are more likely to get it." In a low-key letter dated October 14, 1918, they include a press clipping about 100,000 "grip cases reported in the camps. Now the archive doesn't provide a lot… Read More

Description:
Double-page hand colored engraved map, 350 x 445 mm (18" x 14", decorative cartouche. Coloring likely done at a later date, but attractively applied, wide margins, very minor aging; a bright and clear impression. Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726) was a French cartographer who was considered one of the best of his age. He has even been referred to as the father of modern geography, and was appointed Premier Geographer to Louis XV in 1718. According to Tooley and Bricker his 1700 map of Africa added a level of accuracy that would hold value for decades to come. This map of Africa is map number 84 in Norwich's Maps of Africa. The coloring was probably done at a later date, but there is an attractive cartouche with several figures, including a man spearing a crocodile. The map is from an Italian edition of Delisle’s Atlante Novissimo. Tooley & Bricker: Landmarks of Mapmaking. Norwich # 84.
