Description:
New York: D. Appleton-Century Company, 1932. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding/near Very Good dust jacket. Octavo. [8], 325 pp. First edition, first printing. In publisher's cloth with dust jacket. An extremely fresh copy with little wear to speak of; contents are clean; dust jacket is quite nice with some light edgewear with some chipping at the head of the spine that just touches the title; lightly soiled; spine is a trifle faded; price intact on the front flap. Born in Charleston, SC, Cohen was a prolific author. A collection of stories starring Florian Slappey who was perhaps Cohen's most popular fictional character--a caricature of a black man from Birmingham. While Cohen purported to have a great deal of affection for his characters and wrote them with well-meaning affection, the patronization is apparent. Fairly uncommon in this condition.

Richmond: Press of the Dietz Printing Co, 1934. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding/Very Good+ dust jacket. Octavo. xxxvi, 767, [3] pp., plates, maps, facsims. First edition, one of 1000 copies, thing one being out of series. In publisher's cloth with striking cloth dust jacket; all plates are present as called for. This is a remarkably bright copy in a similarly sharp dust jacket. Initially a more ambitious project, this first volume was the only one published by Nugent for many decades until in the late 1970s the project was resumed by others using some page proofs from a second volume that was started by Nugent but never seen through the presses. Several additional volumes were seen to fruition by Denis Hudgins. First edition copies of this first volume are quite uncommon in commerce despite a fairly large printing.

London: Trelawney Saunders, 1850. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Octavo. xii 164 pp., frontis, 2 plates. First edition. In publisher's blue, embossed cloth; a separately published folding map to accompany this volume is not present and is itself fairly uncommon, otherwise all plates are present. Binding is a trifle shelfworn and has a notable forward lean; corners and spine ends softened; very sensitive conservation work to some to some weak spots in the cloth; additionally, the a few preliminary leaves have been sympathetically reattached and the front hinge mended; all in all, some very discreet and professional work. Contents are largely clean but for some light foxing to the three engravings; a few leaves have been roughly or carelessly opened leaving some tears in the margin. Previous ownership stamp of 20th century American archaeologist Harry Evelyn Dorr Pollock on the front free endpaper; Edmonds & Remnants, London binder's ticket on the rear pastedown. Uncommon. Hartford: Thomas Green, 1767. Disbound. Good binding. Small quarto 28 pp. First edition. Removed from volume. Staining to the inner portion of the first five leaves and, less prominent, some toning to the lower inner margin of the last few leaves as well as the verso of the final leaf, otherwise generally clean. An uncommon memorial sermon for the Roger Wolcott who in addition to a distinguished military career culminating in his being placed second in command of New England forces during King George's War, he also had a robust political career from Justice of the Peace to chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court to colonial governor. Several pages of the sermon are given over to outlining Wolcott's life from his humble childhood forward. Printed by Thomas Green, the first printing in Hartford who set up his press only a few years before this in 1764. A bold, bordered and strongly inked title page make this a striking imprint.
