Description:
242 pages with maps, diagrams, charts, tables, bibliography and indices. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Colección Investigaciones (Colegio de Michoacán) First edition. Tollan is a name used for the capital cities of two empires of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica; first for Teotihuacan, and later for the Toltec capital, Tula, both in Mexico. The name has also been applied to the Postclassic Mexican settlement Cholula. The name Tōllān means "Among the reeds" in the Nahuatl language, with the figurative sense of a densely populated "place where people are thick as reeds". Names with the same meaning were used in Maya and other native Mexican languages. Teotihuacan seems to have been the first city known by this name. After the collapse of the Teotihuacan empire, central Mexico broke into various petty states. The Toltec created the first sizable Mexican empire after the fall of Teotihuacan, and their capital was referred to by the same name as a reference to the… Read More

Quarto (11 1/4" x 8 3/4") bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition.Silverman shows that Cahuachi was much larger and more complex than portrayed in the current literature but that, surprisingly, it was not a densely populated city. Rather, Cahuachi was a grand ceremonial center whose population, size, density and composition changed to accommodate a ritual and political calendar. Silverman meticulously presents and interprets an abundance of current data on the physical complexities, burials and artifacts of this prominent site; in addition, she synthesizes the history of previous fieldwork at Cahuachi and introduces a correct map and a new chronological chart for the Rio Grande de Nazca drainage system. On the basis of empirical field data, ethnographic analogy and settlement pattern analysis, Silverman constructs an Andean models of Nasca culture that is… Read More

Description:
51 pages with plate and illustration. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with black lettering and decoration to cover. First edition. Caithness is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area of Scotland. Caithness originally formed part of the shire or sheriffdom of Inverness, but gradually gained independence: in 1455 the Earl of Caithness gained a grant of the justiciary and sheriffdom of the area from the Sheriff of Inverness. In 1503 an act of the Parliament of Scotland confirmed the separate jurisdiction, with Dornoch and Wick named as burghs in which the sheriff of Caithness was to hold courts. The area of the sheriffdom was declared to be identical to that of the Diocese of Caithness. The Sheriff of Inverness still retained power over important legal cases, however, until 1641. In that year, parliament declared Wick the head burgh of the shire of Caithness and the Earl of Caithness became the heritable sheriff. Condition: Corners bumped,… Read More

245 pages. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's quarter blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine over orange boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition.
Charles Hardaway climbs the hill to his house, immediately missing the bright lights and conversation of the bar and dreading the return to his lover, who is slowly dying of AIDS. But Hardaway's self-pity is interrupted by a pipe-wielding stranger, who crushes his skull before slipping away. It's nighttime in the Castro, and another gay man has been sent to his grave.
Homicide lieutenant Frank Hastings is tempted to write the killing off as another heinous instance of gay-bashing, but witnesses say the killer was alone, and seemed to know the victim. Digging into Hardaway's past, Hastings finds evidence that he was a blackmailer who pushed one of his targets to the breaking point. In a neighborhood where disease and hatred claim more and more lives every day, it seems one man has been done in by plain old-fashioned greed.… Read More

First edition. The California Chess Reporter ran for 25 year from 1951 to 1976. It was published six times a year. The first issue of the California Chess Reporter, that promised continuous coverage of the entire state, appeared on June 1951 and was published in ten issues that year. Editor Dr. H. J. Ralston's first editorial explained it best, "The unhappy demise of the Chess Digest early this year left the chess players of California without any organ for the systematic publication of chess news. It has been the fate of chess publications in the past to quietly expire unless they enjoyed the support of some solid organization of chess players. The present issue of the Reporter is made possible by the generous financial support of the San Francisco Bay Area Chess League, which voted funds for the publication at the meeting of May 6, 1951.Condition:Some light edge… Read More

Carmen Rangel is strong-willed and has a firm sense of her identity, despite being of mixed blood in the racially stratified society of colonial Mexico. Carmen is drawn more to the arts of warfare than those of domesticity and Carmen becomes a daring participant in the wars of Mexican independence from Spain and of Texas independence from Mexico." "In contrast to these apparently masculine pursuits, Carmen falls in love with adventurer Coalter Owens and bears him a daughter. In the course of her continued struggles for the liberal cause, Carmen becomes separated both from her beloved, whom she believes dead, and from her daughter. Despite increased research interest in the interaction of native North American peoples and Europeans, little attention has been directed toward Indian-Franch interactions-even though for more than a century the French controlled an area of the interior more than twice the size of the combined North American territories of Great Britain and Spain. Calumet and Fluer-de-Lys focuses on historic Native American sites and archaeological evidence of native interaction with the French from the landing of Jean Nicollet in Green Bay in 1634 to the surrender of French America to the British in 1765. It integrates, for the first time, historical documents of the French politicians, explores, priests, and traders with the archaeological record of numerous mid-continental native and French colonial sites. The 1904 Cambridge Springs International Chess Congress was the first major international chess tournament in America in the twentieth century. All of the world's top players were invited to the tournament. Géza Maróczy was unable to attend due to his career as a mathematics teacher. Siegbert Tarrasch, having finished behind Lasker at Hastings and Nuremberg, was carefully avoiding tournaments in which Lasker was participating.

The tournament started on April 25, 1904, and ended on May 19, 1904. It was a single-round-robin tournament where each player would play one game against the other players, for a total of fifteen games. Games were played on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.
