New York: Coward-McCann, Inc.. Near Fine in Good dj. 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. [nice tight copy with no discernible wear, appears unread, vintage bookseller's label on rear pastedown (Newbegins, San Francisco); jacket has some shallow chipping along the top edge, small tears and a bit of paper loss at most corners, general overall wear but still colorful and attractive]. Very scarce novel with a theatrical background, "about Min, who grew up among the cabbages, and married the harlequin, Lancelot Le Roy, star 'heavy' of the Julie La Verne Repertoire Company. An inexperienced country girl, Min was transplanted to the theatre of the nineties, where she became a buck and wing dancer -- and the mother of twins. The youngsters grew to be child actors of talent, and finally Broadway stars of international fame." The first of two novels by this author, a former film actress who had appeared in over one hundred silent films (many of which she also wrote), almost all… Read More

New York: Dodd, Mead and Company. Good. 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [moderately worn copy, half of ffep torn away, light dampstain on rear cover, spine turned, front jacket text glued to front pastedown]. Scarce crime novel in which a detective and an orchestra leader team up to solve the murder of a notorious gamber/gangster. "A vivid picture of New York after dark. Gangsters, chorus girls, and society looking for a thrill, move through these pages, adding color and character to a story that races along on a high note of exciting suspense." Touted on the jacket blurb as the author's "latest novel," omitting to mention that he had actually been dead for a couple of years (since February 1935). This didn't seem to put much of a crimp in his output, however, this being the fifth of six novels to appear posthumously -- and the only one to bear his wife's name as co-author, which would seem to imply that the others had already been… Read More

Description:
Van Nuys CA: Venice Publishing Corporation. Very Good+. 1972. 1st Edition (pbo). Softcover. [nice tight copy, light horizontal crease near top of front cover]. Mass Market PB INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the inside front cover. A novel about a Governor whose re-election campaign is imperiled when he's involved in an accident that results in the death of a young woman, and has to cover it up; the similarities to Teddy Kennedy's 1969 Chappaquiddick plunge are probably not coincidental. The bio material on Slatzer touts "his friendship and acquaintance with every President since Harry Truman," and his purportedly extensive credits in the movie and TV biz (which in the end didn't amount to much) -- but he'll ultimately be remembered for his claim, in a book published two years after this one, that he had been secretly married to Marilyn Monroe in Mexico in 1952, and that the marriage had been broken up by Fox studio chief Darryl Zanuck. The rear cover reproduces a little squib from the Village Voice, noting that the plot involves a young woman who "has been sadly bouncing between frat-house letter-men in quest of her first orgasm, all to no avail [until] she falls in with the bearded Jewish leader of SDS, who gives her hormoes a taste of what the vanguard's all about." New York: Dodd, Mead & Company. Very Good+. 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, light dust-soiling to top of text block, spine a little darkened]. (pen and ink drawings) A novel themed around the post-slavery migration of African-Americans from the South to the North, focusing on a group of "plantation Negroes" whose way of life is upended when the precarious financial situation of their home plantation eventually leads to its sale. From the New York Times review: "The Negroes are torn between their loyalty to their feudal lord, their love of the slow-going ways of life on the plantation, and the inducements held out to them by friends who have gone North to Harlem." The author is further described in the review (and wouldn't you know it?) as "a Southern woman whose personal affection for unlettered, plantation Negroes is as apparent as her intimate knowledge of them." .

[nice tight copy, very light shelfwear, one-time owner's address label on ffep; jacket slightly age-toned, a trace of wear along top edge, two-inch wrinkle/pucker along top rear hinge, minor soiling to rear panel]. Erotic take-off on Voltaire's Candide -- generally thought of as an artifact of the 1960s, although it was first published in France (as by "Maxwell Kenton") in 1958 -- here making its first legit (i.e., non-smuggled) appearance in the U.S., this also being the first hardcover issue, ditto the first with the authors' real names acknowledged. The book has (thankfully) outlived its notoriously awful 1968 film adaptation to become something of a bona fide classic. [All points for the First American Edition (first printing, unstated) have been confirmed, so thanks for not asking. Buy with confidence!] .
