Cai Guo-Qiang was born in Quanzhou, China, in 1960, and lived in Tokyo from 1985 to 1995, before moving to New York. During the 1990s he emerged on to the international art scene and has become a major figure of contemporary Chinese art. He has made projects in all the inhabited continents of the world. Cai's early works from the 1980s took the form of oil paintings, but these gradually evolved as he became interested in harnessing the power of nature to develop his work in new and unusual ways. His early experiments included making rubbings from rocks and trees on the canvas before painting it, and using exploding gunpowder to mark and scorch the canvas. The Cantos by Ezra Pound is a long poem in 109 sections plus a number of drafts and fragments added as a supplement at the request of the poem's American publisher, James Laughlin. Strong claims have been made for it as the most significant work of modernist poetry of the twentieth century. Charming colour illustration throughout with a wealth of detail and nuance. Comparison with the English edition by Collins, show a different cover, all the interior illustrations are the same except that the all signage has been rendered in French. The text in French seems a bit more exciting in tone when compared to the English translation by Carruth. There were 15 books in the Caroline series altogether, all characterized by charm and Joie de vivre.
