Publisher's stapled wrappers, octavo, pp. 40. Front panel illustration of star Ethel Merman by Peter Arno, New Yorker Magazine's influential cartoonist. Includes many period advertisements and bygone polite theatre requests such as "Ladies are requested to remove their hats." As collectors and scholars of the era are aware, the cheaper quality paper used for this item is a bit toned and brittle and should be handled carefully (we have provided a clear archival display sleeve with white card-stock backing board for storage). Indeed, the upper tips of the first two leaves have chipped away over the decades (no loss of text) and the front and rear wrappers are separating upwards from the foot of the spine. A pleasant divertissement notwithstanding.

Publisher's green cloth with white spine lettering, octavo, pp. ix, 262. Illustrations. GOOD with one bottom-edge shelf ding. GOOD dust jacket has some old creasing and minor erosion at crown of spine; rubbing at foot of spine and fold points; nicks and short tears with no loss. Jacket now protected against further wear by a new sheet of archival Brodart.

Publisher's stapled and string tied-wrappers, 12mo, pp. 32. Includes Religious, Patriotic, and Popular sections. Music and lyrics for "Maryland! My Maryland!"; "My Old Kentucky Home"; "Star-Spangled Banner"; among others. Lyrics only for "Dixie." Contemporary ads. POOR condition. Cheap paper is heavily toned and crumbling, almost at the touch. Heavy edge wear and chipping. Ensconced now by us in a protective new Ultra-Pro sleeve.

Publisher's original light brown cloth with spine lettering and ruling gilt, octavo, pp. 403 + [3]. Black and white illustrations. Minor shelf rubbing at foot of spine and bottom board edges. Some mild age toning to text block. Dust jacket FAIR-only, with nicks and short tears, especially at spine ends. A couple of old tape repairs by a previous owner are visible beneath Brodart.

Jacket ensconced now in a new sheet of archival mylar. Reprint of the Charleston edition (1854) of the only surviving copy of one of the earliest Southern sales catalogues.

These three and several others were instrumental in the founding of the Seminary, which was initially the Maine Charity School. Indeed, the manuscript charter document is written in the hand of Bayley. INSCRIBED at top edge of title page "With the respects of T[homas] C[ogswell] Upham." The notable Upham (1799-1872) was an influential Bowdoin College professor, author, and friend to Harriet Beecher Stowe during her residence at Brunswick, Maine. Stowe described the Uphams as "delightful" and "a beautiful pattern of a Christian family." Enoch Pond, native of Wrentham Massachusetts and 1813 graduate of Brown University, came to the Bangor, Maine, Theological Seminary as a Professor of Theology in June 1832. It was not a financially rewarding position, nor was it prestigious, and almost from his arrival, in addition to his role as instructor, he was pressured to shoulder substantial administrative duties at the struggling institution.
