Ch'eng-Wen, Tai Pei (1966) Near fine. No dust jacket. 775 p. Author was Head of Commissioner, Chinese Customs Service. The western nations exploited China in many ways; one of these was in the Treaty of Nanking (1842) by which the western nations controlled tariffs for the importation of goods into China. Book was originally published in 1938 in Hong Kong and Shanghai; I am offering a republication by Ch'eng-Wen in the Republic of China (Taipei) in 1966 (Statement in back of book. ) Book is in near tiptop condition and might be graded fine but has on fep a stamp of former graduate student at xxx university. 775 p.

  • Book condition: Fine

Fine. No dust jacket. was issued. A never-read copy of the definitive book on the postal systems of BC and Vancouver Island I am not sure how to grade this book. It is that scarce first edition with the statement on prelims "Of this First Edition Five Hundred Copies have been Printed. This is No. 17" These low print runs are typical of publications by the archives in twenties and thirties. One run of a Vancouver book was as low as five copies. It also seems to have been the practice of author or archivist to have given some copies to local notables. This copy has turned up with a small collection of archive books: it has never been read-the signatures are not cut open. It is in the usual brown (is it linen? ) boards with bevelled edges. Page edges untrimmed. The grading is difficult because although never read, it has been on the recipient's shelf for almost ninety years and has at back two spots of missing color. One spot is pin-head size. One spot (2mm) spot on title page. The other is almost ... Read more
